Default 2003 Mustang Gt throwing P0340 Code

Hello Everyone,

I am new to this forum. I have recently had an issue with my car throwing a P0340 code. I first noticed the issue when I started up my car and quickly died after starting twice! I got it running and returned home and noticed a funny smell and a low whine from the engine. I replaced the Camshaft Position Sensor and it continued to backfire or burp upon start up. Next I disconnected the battery terminals for 10 minutes and the check engine light went away. I still have the same whine and burping issues with start up but no check engine warning light. I read it may be the alternator but, wanted to get some advice from fellow mustang enthusiasts before driving it to get the alternator reading. Id appreciate some advice.

Update- Check engine light returned, I drove the car around for a while and it seems to be running fine except the low whining noise is still present.
