Cool

"Some" game playing? If you arent hardcore, running big resolutions, or too concerned with social status (hehe.. 'social'.. a practical oxymoron in this case).... I'd go for a Geforce2MX, Geforce 1 DDR, or GF2. Check some reviews www.sharkyextreme.com www.anandtech.com www.shugashack.com www.3dgpu.com www.tweak3d.net wwwwwwwwwwwwwwww... lots more than that

Hold off a second, because the next generation GeForce is almost out. That's what you want! Can't wait, get the GeForce2 GTS Ultra 64 MB DDR Ram.

I would say get a GeForce DDR or the GeForce2. They apparently perform about the same, really just depending on resolution. I would say wait as well, but you won't want to buy the new one, it will be excitingly expensive. But if you wait, the Geforce and the Geforce2 will be less. I don't think it will matter much, just grab a geforce. Check out http://www.dansdata.com

If all your going to be doing is playing games then I would have to agree with Z28EATR, a Voodoo video card is good and should be sufficient for your needs.

As much as I liked my Voodoo 3 3000, I couldn't get over how much better my new Geforce2 GTS is. Whatever you get make sure and spend the money to get DDR.... And good luck!

Whatever you do, do NOT go with any Voodoo card. The company has gone belly up (even though they are still selling the leftover cards) There will be no drivers released for future compatibility.

The GeForce2 MX is a good card for all around gaming if you are concerned with price. (you can get it for $100-$120

If you plan on getting the best expect to pay 400-500.

Oh...Wow, thanks for the info. ed1371, did'nt know that. I personally don't have the voodoo card, I use 3d labs gmx card, only because most of the work I do is 3d animations, obviously not a card you wanna use for playing games.

If you can still get you hands on Voodoo5 64MB do it! The price is dirt CHEAP right now cuz 3DFX went down under. Should be well under $200US.

If you can't then the Geforce2 (GTS) 32MB version just drop in price about 2 weeks ago. Should be able to get those for under $200US. The GeForce MX is a great product (sorta of a reduced Geforce 2 (GTS)... you can get those for about $100US. Look at ASUS, ELSA, and Creative for the better pricing.

Check out our company site [url]http://www.ovega.ca[url] ...keep in mind our pricing is in Canadian dollars (conversion is about ($$x.65) rightnow).

if you want to be hardcore go wait for a little bit and go with a GeForce3, but if you don't want to wait go with a GeForce2 with 64mb or ram. Don't bother wasting time with any voodoo.

voodoo was taken to court for something and i know that as part of the settlement the other company had to buy them out, so as far as them going belly up im not so sure, and im sure that the other company would still use the voodoo name considering how popular the name is. my 2 cents

here is a quote from the i guess now the ex ceo of 3dfx about the voodoo company.

To our valued customers:

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the support you've given 3dfx over the years. Through all our ups and downs, we've always been proud of our extremely loyal customers and fans. That's what makes our recent actions so difficult.

Although we've done our best to avoid taking drastic action, we have finally been forced to admit that there is no possible way we can continue in our current state. As such, we have negotiated an agreement with nVidia that will allow us to provide the best possible result to our creditors, investors, employees and customers.

Under this agreement, nVidia will acquire certain, specific assets from 3dfx including technology, company and product brands and other assets. In addition, the 3dfx board of directors has recommended to our shareholders the dissolution of the company over the next few months. Until that time, however, 3dfx products will remain available at various retail and online locations, and we will continue to support our current and future customers. For additional information, please see the press releases that were issued by 3dfx on December 15, 2000.

While we firmly believe this agreement is in the best interest of all involved, we deeply regret these actions. Again, we want to extend our sincerest thanks to every one of you who helped 3dfx revolutionize 3D graphics and 3D gaming on the PC.

Sincerely,
Scott Sellers
3dfx Founder and CTO

Do you know what your motherboard chipset is going to be? Go for real Intel if this decision hasn't been made yet. The other chipsets have real problems with AGP since they had to reverse engineer to get them working. The GeForce II is a great card but it can be frustrating if it won't work because of chipset incompatibilities.
