Angry First major tickets (after watching Fast+Furious)

Hi,
Ok, being the idiots we are, my friend and I decide to drive around and try racing each other after seeing the movie Fast and the Furious (nice movie btw).

Anywho, slowing down near a bunch of lights, we both get pulled over by two unmarked units. My cop asks me stuff like what's under the hood, and then tells me to come outside and hear the exhaust. He told me how mine was loud, and then he said: "See, this is an LT1. See how quiet it is?"

Well, now I figured it out. This guy is a Chevy guy and I'm gonna get some big fines. Anywho, he asked me some stupid crap which I tried to answer them all (about my insurance company havin pics of my car with gauges and stuff, etc.)

Anywho, after spending like 40min in his cruiser, he comes to me and gives me my tickets:

1) Tinting in windows obscuring interior - $110
2) Loud exhaust - $110
3) No sticker on ownership - $110

I have a copy of ownership and he told me about no sticker or whatever. Damn, I'm so pissed. Im gonna appeal this and hopefully will walk away with low fines.

So, you guys think I can win on some of these tickets?

Bye!

Oh yea, Like there's not 15,000 LT1s with 3 chamber flowmasters around...

I would think you'd be able get at least two of them dropped completely, but things are different in diff places.

If your windows are tinted too dark according to the law, that was a petty ticket, but the law is the law and that will probably go in with full effect.

If I had been dumb enough to go out racing after a movie like that (where cops should be expected-- you know it wasn't a good move on your part), I would appeal the other 2 charges.

If you have bill of sale or some paper of ownership, insurance and registration, I don't see what the problem is unless there is some EXTRA law on driving a vehicle on public roadways that I dont know about.

Also appeal the loud exhaust one. How the heck can they charge you with that? Do you not have mufflers?? I'd do a little law research b4 I entered the courtroom.

And DON'T FORGET (I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH), drive the point home about how this stupid cop (don't use those words though) made that comment about his car being an LT1 and blow it up BIG TIME. He should have not made any comment like that at all. It was very unprofessional, rude, and intimidating!

Appeal the 2, but do some research b4 you go to court. If you did not have illegal tint, then just appeal that too.

BTW, if you did screw up on all three points (are actually guilty), just pay the fines and live with a lesson learned.

Hi,
Well, I will stress the point about him quoting his LT1 engine. The tinted windows I can look into. I have some code and some numbers written on the rear window and there is some text, and the word "DOT" appears.

I don't have proof that the exhaust is a Mac cat-back but I know it is a Mac cuz of those 3" chrome pipes and the sound (plus there is a Mac sticker stuck somewhere in my engine bay).

And I will look into those ownership thing as well. This is my first major tickets, and as obvious, I've never been in a court. Hopefully this will be an experience.

Thanks!
Bye!

Damn, $110 for tint! It's $42 here.
Some cops have nothing better to do than eat donuts and write tickets. My wife recently got a ticket for her tag light not being bright enough, She had the car painted and they got a little over spray on the tag lights; so it had a green light shining on the tag.

Check your tint, if it is legal, fight it. If he didn't get a decibel reading on the exh, fight that, cause there is no legal basis for it.

Don't you Canadians have a "Registration Card" when your license tags are issued? That's proof of ownership in my part of the world. What's this Ownership Sticker you mention? Ask any cop you see and find out what it is.

Any mufflers other than stock are classified as "Inadequate Mufflers" and usually at the discretion of the stopping officer. His statement about the LT1 was probably to explain the noise level acceptable.

There is a limit on the density of the window tint in most places. Many police here carry a meter to see if it's within limits. If he can't see you thru the tint, it's probably too dark. Most shops won't install illegal tint. If you did it yourself, pay the ticket. If not, take it to a shop that installs tint and get them to check and see if it's legal. If so, pay them to write you a statement to that extent. If not, pay the ticket.

Man that sucks...The cop didn't have to be like that, but I suppose they can give you a ticket for anything because there MR. "BIG BAD COP" they can do whatever they want. 90% of cops are the kid who got beat up in school, or the fat *** that doesn't get any. But 10% are the cool guys. Unless it was like limo tint and you can't see through it, then you shouldn't have got a ticket. As far as exhaust, around here everyone has aftermarket exhaust 2 chamber,3 chamber, borla, everything. But I don't realy know how it is in canada, but sorry to hear about your tickets, **** happens. And for all the cops on this board or whatever, I'm not specifically saying stuff about you ,ok? See ya

That IS Part of what they get paid for.
(The tickets not the donuts)
Another part is putting a bit of a scare into people doing illegal street racing.

I've done this on occasion myself.
I'm not being preachy, just pointing out another POV.

"That car is just as capable of killing someone as a rifle is. You're not going to be target practicing down a busy street where any idiot could blunder into your way, are you?"

now are u sure the cop didn,t know u were racing, and gave u the petty fines because he didn't want to charge u with any thing magor......it's been my experience that sometimes when a cop knows u were doing something wrong and doesn't think you should get in big trouble for it,sometimes they will give you some bull**** fines because they think you should get somthing.......i can't beleive i'm actually defending cops.but i've been in alot of trouble in my life(probly been charged with every traffic related fine Pa. has at least once)so i have alot of experience in this matter.there has been many occations where i was guilty of somthing with harsh punishment and got caught but only wound up with petty fines because the cop was cutting me a break.

now this cop might have just been being a prick and charged u with what ever he could come up with, lord knows i've run into cops like that ....lots of cops like that.

just be sure he didnt have proof of you racing before you fight the other charges,if he did have proof and cut you a break with the petty charges ,than he'll be pist about you fighting charges and may come up with more charges

just my 2 cents

Did the cop write down what regulations you were breaking? You can look them up on the E-Laws website. Post them here, too, I'd like to read them.

Foxtrot,

Yeah, that's their job, but some cops are just a**-holes. I've had 'em tail-gait me for 5 miles, only to pull me over for crossing the centerstripe, which is bull-poo. I never crossed the freakin' stripe, and he had backed off to about 3 cars back by the time I turned the corner which is blind, so he couldn't have seen me if I did. He pulls me over, gives me a warning, and then starts questioning me as to where I'm going and what I'm doing out this late at night. I'm thinkin', "None of your freakin' business." And it really isn't. I did nothing wrong, and he had no cause to pull me over, and he sure didn't need to get up in my business.

I've also had cops follow me around town for 15 minutes. After they stop that crap, I just start following them. Makes 'em kinda wiggy.

keep in mind that many times late night they are just checking for DUI. not that i think this is ok, because it isnt. harrasment is the word, can you say it? but still, for instance the liscense plate light thingy, that happened to me in my truck, but after he talked to me and i proved i wasnt wasted (although i did have a few, but i admitted i had a couple at the argosy while watching the basketball game) and even though i had a beer stuffed under my seat spilling everywhere, (he didnt notice) he let me go. i dont get wasted and drive, i really dont get wasted anymore at all. hate the next day. but i have in the past and i know personally how dangerous it can be. i dont think they should harrass us just to 'check' up on us, but drinking and driving is a big issue that gets worse every year as the population rises.
main thing man, just be nice and try to find something to change the subject. especially if they give you the opportunity. being in the airborne is a good one for me cause many cops are ex military also. if they relate with you at all, your more likely to get by. they know we are not all bad people, but they are also the ones that have to go to the scenes when people are killed and maimed beyond belief. after a few of those, and thinking of your own children (although i dont have any) i can see why they would be concerned with stupid **** and want you to learn a lesson. unfortunately, lessons are rarely learned from a fine and it just puts hardships on the individuals lives.

Yeah I was on the highway in my 69 camaro, it had 450hp(fuel injected 350)trick flow heads etc....these kids were in a supercharged grand am or something similar, and they were yelling at me , blah ,blah, wanting to race me. So they took off balls to the wall, then I took off and flew by them, going well over the speed limit, and then I saw my exit so i cut in front of this car and got off, and it was a cop! All he did was flick his lights, I suppose to warn me. I about died. I was Lucky.

Hi,
Here are the laws I broke (according to Ontario Highway Traffic Act):

About my loud exhaust:
75. (1) Every motor vehicle or motor assisted bicycle shall be equipped with a muffler in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise and excessive smoke, and no person shall use a muffler cut-out, straight exhaust, gutted muffler, hollywood muffler, by-pass or similar device upon a motor vehicle or motor assisted bicycle.

About my tinting:
73. (1) No person shall drive a motor vehicle upon a highway,
(a) with any sign, poster or other non-transparent material or object placed on the windshield or on any window of such motor vehicle
in a manner that will obstruct the driver's view of the highway or any intersecting highway.
Colour coating obstructing view prohibited

Now, I got a free leak test done at a local auto shop, and they found a leak above the weld point that joins the exiting tailpipe to the muffler. No leak elsewhere though. The cop didn't mention leak just said it was loud...Hmm, I couldn't find any law on tail-pipes requirement so my 'leak' is basically like a muffler-dump.

Bye!
