Question Dumb webhosting guys

Man, I haven't been able to get on the site for 2 hours! I keep getting this stupid web hosting site come up!

I guess Dan answered this question in my other post.

Let's hope it gets answered soon! Plus it is taking forever to load anything!

I haven't been able to get on this afternoon either. Finally made it tho. This is for a fact, the slowest board I visit. I don't know if it's my server, Dan's server or in between, but it's always slow. I'm using a cable modem, and you'd think I was using 28.8.

No, unfortunately it is a combination of two problems at once. First, there is a DNS problem on our DNS providers end. Secondly, there seems to be a server problem on our advertising company's end for our smaller 125x125 side banners. The latter issue is seriously hanging up the site layout from loading.

The servers MustangWorks runs are fairly fast, and the main server sits behind multiple OC3's. There is no shortage of bandwidth availability here. I personally run on a 768 Kbs SDSL connection and I get over 80 K/s from the MW server.

Dan - I log on several times a day, and many times, a page will come up, it will say document done, but I'll have to hit Reload a couple times to get page up. I'm using Netscape 4.7.

Also, on sign-in... Seems like most times, after initial sign-in, if I go to another page to post, I'll have to sign-in again. Is this how the system is 'posed to work? Seems to time out pretty quickly.

Sounds to me like you are asking about your user log in for the message board, which is a totally different issue than the speed or performance of the server. Is your account saved properly on your web browser with cookies? I.e. When you click post and you get the form to fill out does your username and password automatically appear so you don't have to type it. Is that what you are talking about?

There were two subjects above, first was my observation regarding sluggishness of board.

Second is in regard to log in. I do have cookies on. My log on info never appears when I first log on.

For instance, between the first and second of my posts on this subject, I had to re-log on. Between the second one and this one, I didn't have to log on. I didn't leave the site either time.

Ok... your preferences are saved on your browser then, but not your username and password. What you need to do is go into "Preferences" and on that page select to erase your msg board cookies. After that, then reset your preferences. Then, go into your "Profile" and even if you do not change anything re-submit it. This will cause the board to resave the cookie info to your browser.

In other thoughts... I don't know what the heck this DNS problem is with Dotster, but I'm really getting upset about it! errrrrr.

Dan - That did it, I guess somewhere along the line the cookie snapped! I had done that before.

Thanks....

I just added the following to my hosts file in the \WINNT\SYSTEM32 directory.

216.122.146.10 www.mustangworks.com

That should fix things until the DNS is fixed.

Dan-
I don't know if it's because I'm on a Mac, but my experience with MW today was different from what I'm reading. I was able to access MW all day, at will, BUT, it sometimes would hang between pages for 20 seconds or so, and in the status bar it would say "connecting to: oz.valueclick.com". Then the page would open just fine, but the next link I clicked on would take 20 seconds to open, and that same message would be in the status bar. I never saw valueclick.com, but figured the browser was trying to decide between it and the preselected address. This went on for about 20 minutes at one point, then cleared up, then returned an hour later, for about 15 minutes, then was gone for good. At one point, I even shut down my Mac thinking it was something on my end, but it wasn't. Still, I got through to MW and the forums every time I tried. Just sometimes there was a pause.

What do you think, Dan?

BTW, My system is a G4 / OS 9.1 / 466 / 90gig / 512MB / IE 5.0

Take care
~Chris

PKRWUD, that is the problem I was referring to with one of our advertisers deliver company's server(s). I've noticed that valueclicks servers seems to do this periodically. I'm ready to cut them off, because it's not worth hurting the site's performance on a recurring basis. Valuelick delivers many of the smaller 125x125 banners on the left side of the site, which appear under the navigation. It just depends, because we use ad services, but also do our own ad delivery and rotations as well.

95mustanggt, on Windows 95/98/ME you have to edit a file in the "Windows" directory called, "lmhosts". Open notepad, direct it to the windows directory, and then just manually type in lmhosts as the filename to open. If it already exists it will open it, if not it will ask you to create a new file. Say yes. Enter:

216.122.146.10 mustangworks.com
216.122.146.10 www.mustangworks.com

However, be aware that this could also be a bad idea because if we ever change server IP addresses for some reason or add additional servers and use multiple IP's (we do now on varying conical domain names) then you would still be going to the old IP address if you keep your system from doing DNS lookups on our domain name.

Well It may be a bad idea, but it is such a pain not being able to login for several hours.

I only have a couple chances during the day sometimes to check in and if I can't I miss more than a couple hours!

Guess I'll stay keep the IE window open forever!

THAT DAMN DOTSTER THING IS GETTING REALLY REALLY OLD!!!

I cant get on Mustangworks (The real site) at all during the night, and only during like a 1 1/2 hour span during the day.

I kicked my sisters computer desk, that didnt work. Swore at the screen, that didnt work, swore at the keyboard, that also didnt work.

Finally I swore at the little box called the modem, Once again.....That didnt work either. SO I gave the computer desk one last kick and turned the computer off.

2 days in a row.

So why is my Mac not affected by this? Is it the Mac or the IE?

Take care

It shouldn't have anything to do with whether you have a MAC or PC. It's because Dotster's DNS server was giving out the wrong IP address for our domain name to other DNS servers (like those at your ISP) when they requested it. Unfortunately, then your ISP's DNS server cache's that information and doesn't usually renew it (request it again) for a day or two usually, or whatever length of time your ISP's expire time is set to.

It appears to be fixed, but it took (or will take) a couple days to correct itself across all the DNS servers out there.
