Wont hurt at all. Before the days of coatings on headers, they were all just painted flat black but the paint wasn't very good. We used to take 'em out of the box, sandbast 'em and paint them inside and out with a good high temp. header paint. You can even get it in different colors. I used to paint them a color to match the vehicle. It would last about a year and I'd take them off and paint 'em again.

The best I have found is from Resto-Motive labs. They make POR-15 rust preventitive paint and have a decent "high temp" header paint. The spray can stuff will be off, or fading, in no time.

Just my $.02

I just got a can of header paint from summit. Not sure who makes it (dci, duc?)but it is silicon spray that can be used on header wrap or just the header. I got the aluminum paint and it looks exactly like the original finish on the mac headers. looks real trick.
