Question Painting the car

I'm going to paint my car soon. Any tips for a brand or type of paint to use or stay away from?

Scherwin Williams is the way to go. I think PPG is supposed to be pretty good too, but I'm not 100% on that.

PPG is great, haven't used sherwin williams, but they sell good house paint, smiling. I just did some painting myself and the PPG system with the clear coat works well...

I assume you will use a base - clear system. Definately the best way to go. Don't skimp on the clear. I used four coats - if you do this you will really appreciate having a little extra thickness when you have to fix minor stuff that hasn't went all the way through to the base. I have been amazed at the ugly scratches that I've been able to buff out.

I used PPG DBU base and PPG clear. In general just make sure you don't use cheap products. The higher dollar stuff will shoot better, will last longer, and you will have much better quality. The DBU can be used on your plastic too without flex agent. So make sure you check to see if the product you use needs to have flex agent added for painting over plastic or moldings.
I'm going on 2 yrs with this paint and it's still in great shape.

Don't just use a cheap primer. And always start with a coat of sealer over the whole car.

Good luck!!

RTZ- If you are wanting a cool paint go with House of Color. They are usually pearls, and they have a tri-color that is cheap. If you want factory, go with PPG or DuPont.

Also the best guy around is Tim Stecker up in BodyWorx in Guthrie.

In regards to the comment that no flex agent is needed, that is true for the base coat, but looking over my PPG guide pages you do need a flex agent for the clear. Just a thought.
