![]() I am looking to buy some gears for my 1998 cobra. I have decided to go with the 3.73's. Does anybody know where I can buy a set online that comes with everything I need to have them changed. Somebody said that FMS comes with everything. Where can I purchase those online? Thanks.

![]() I would just have them installed professionally. (unless you are an experienced mechanic) It might cost an extra $200 but it will be done right without any headaches. If you are going to install them yourself then I think summitracing.com has a rear gear installation kit.

![]() Setting up gears is tricky business leave it to someone who will stand behind their work. It may cost more, but it could save you more than $200 worth of headache or heartbreak.

![]() Here's a site I was looking into for rear end gears. Haven't done business, so I can't recommend them, but you can give them a look.

![]() 98CobraConv, you got to step up to a 4.10:1 gearset. You know your 4.6 Mod motor doesn't have alot of torque, but you can rev it to at least 7000 rpms with no problems. Go with the 4.10:1 gears! If you drag race often, go with a 4.33:1 gearset. www.jegs.com has a ring & pinion and installation kit for the 8.8" Ford rearend. Good luck!

![]() I WAS JUST TALKING TO A FORD TECH AT WORK AND WE WERE TALKING ABOUT MY 96 4.6 2V AND WE FELT THAT 3.73 IN MY CAR FOR UNDER $400.00 INSTALLED WITH PARTS WOULD GIVE ME THE MOST BANG FOR THE BUCK. THAT WILL BE MY NEXT MOD. HE FELT 4.10 FOR AN ALL SEASON (WISCONSIN) EVERY DAY ALL YEAR AROUND DRIVER MIGHT BE A LITTLE TOO MUCH. I WILL GO WITH 3.73 BECAUSE I NEVER GO TO THE STRIP.

4V 5 speed = 4:10 check out www.alternativeauto.com 4:10's would put you in the 4V's powerband comfortably with no driveability issues. ------------------ 1998 Mustang Gt C&L 80mm Steeda Underdrives Steeda Tri-Ax Magnaflows |

![]() I suggest 4.30's for a Cobra. 4.10's will put you though the traps at the wrong point NA.

![]() I was planning on having them installed professionally. I know nothing about installing gears. I was just asking about FMS gears. I remember someone saying that they come with everything you need (pinion seals, pinion bearings, outer bearings, carrier bearings, and 23 tooth speedo gear). As of right now I am not planning on racing my car. It is a daily driver and only used on the street. That is why I was thinking of the 3.73's. I figured that would be a hella improvement over the stock 3.27's. If I go with 4.10's and still drive comfortably on the highway and roadtrips than I might consider getting those. As of right now the only modifications on my car are a K&N, Bassini X-Pipe with Cats, and a Borla Catback exhaust. I am going to get the gears then I will get a Steeda Tri-ax or the Pro5.0 shifter. After that I will look into suspension. Can I do the install on the shifter myself or will have to pay to do that? Thanks.

![]() Well, the Mod motors dont have the low end grunt of the 5.0 and its brothers. The 4:10s in a 99 Plus stang wake up acceleration like you would not believe.
My friend Tim C has 4:10's in his 99 GT 35th aniv ed, with a 5spd. Off the line theres no catching him. ------------------ 64 1/2 "D" code Red Mustang Coupe. 289, C4, Mallory duel point. ![]() I installed my B&M Ripper on my 96GT myself and had no problems(note i'm not that mechanically inclined). I would imagine that most aftermarket shifters have about the same installation so you should have no problems.

![]() hmmm....after reading even more about it I am still puzzling over which gears I will get. I know that they will be at least 4.10's since my car lacks rear torque but I have been hearing alot of good things about 4.30's. I am fixing to move up to Maryland in December. It is a 14 hour drive or so. I was wondering if 4.30's will be too much for road trips. I would like my car to be fast but I also would like to be able to take roadtrips from time to time. I read at alternative auto that with 4.10's my car at 80 mph would read about 2700 rpm's on the tach. I can most definately deal with that. Could sombody please tell me. I am going to buy my gears in the next couple of days. Thanks.

![]() Go with the 4.30's, I bought my car with the 3.73's already installed and from talking to people on this board and people around town the best all around gear is the 4.30's. The 3.73's just don't cut it in the Cobra's. JMTC

![]() I just bought FMS 4.30's from summit racing
and a Steeda Tri-Ax off ebay from thunderbolt-motorsports. I hope the 4.30's aren't too much for the interstates, highways, and for taking road trips! ![]() ------------------ 1998 Cobra Conv - White K&N, Bassini X-pipe w/cats, & Borla Catbacks. (Bought FMS 4.30's & Steeda Tri-Ax shifter!) |

![]() Ive had excellent results with both 4.10's and 4.30's.
Just keep in mind that a stock Mustang GT or Cobra has a rev limiter that kicks in at 6800 RPM and its not a fun thing to play with. |
