Default 8"rearend to posi?

Whta are some of the ways to make our 8" ford rearend into a posi rearend? We would like to keep the stock rearend in the mustang if possible.

Finding those 8" chunks is getting harder and more expensive. Which is one main reason I went up to the 9". The easiest way to switch from open to posi is to purchase a complete chunk and bolt it in. You could get just a posi carrier and transplant your gears onto it but it is very difficult if you aren't familiar with doing it. I understand that you want to keep you rear original but some mustangs came with the 9" (K codes). It will be much stronger, easier to find parts, and many more options available, and the prices are about the same for posi units. Down sides to 9" is they are heavier and have a little more drag. A lot would depend on your hp level is.

You should be able to find an 8" posi carrier somewhere. One with new internals should cost about $550-$600 for the whole pumpkin. Posi units are about $350 without installation. It'll cost $100 for a new bearing kit plus about $150 for labor. I just shoved a spool in mine and slapped the slicks on. Terrible for the street though.

Jegs sells a posi unti for an 8". And currie sells a complete posi 3rd member but I think they are a little pricy. They are supposedly very well built though. Good luck

I went the Currie 3rd member route with 3:25 TSD. Couldn't be happier with it. I tach about 3K on the freeway at 70 mph and it is a lot quicker off a stop light. The whole thing with shipping and mounting kit was about $900.

Downside is that I go through back tires pretty quick. Hard to keep my foot out of it with the posi.
