When I get back in a few months(yes, I'm getting deployed somewhere for about three months) I'm going to sink some money in my car.
I was wondering if someone could give me an estimate on horsepower I might get with this setup(sorry, not sure what the lift on the cam is going to be):
289
670CFM Holley 4bbl street advenger seires
pertronix eleitric points
45,000 volts coil
8.8mm wires
headers w/ 2½" pipes that end at the rear tires on the side of the car, not under
peformence air filter
looking for a good four bbl intake(not sure what type)
2:80 gears
c4 tranny 3-speed
I'll list more when I get it all put on.
Edelbrock airgap is a nice intake. It allows air to flow under and around the runners to cool the charge. I know several peeps w/it and they love it. John
Alot here is going to depend on your heads and your cam. These will make it or break it depending on your intended use of the car. Also header choice will have to fit in with the heads and cam. There are really too many unanswered questions to make a power estimation.
Try to figure out what you want the car to do, and then design the whole thing with that in mind. You really do need a comprehesive plan so that you don't have to replace parts that you've already bought

If you have stock heads and a small decent cam (Don't go too big, your gears are horrible and you probably have the stock converter, right?) you'll probably be mid to high 15s....maybe higher....not too sure....you left a little out in the open for us to imagine....hehe....fill us in man!;) :p

Dang....I must be smokin something.....I was thinking about those mods on a 302.
With a 289 you'll see 16s with those mods.
Horsepower numbers....hmm....what was it rated at stock? It wasn't the HiPo 271 Ghp 289 was it? I dunno.....Rev definitely knows better than me on that one...;)

I agree with above although as far as a guesstimate would be --I wouldn't go to far north of what it is stock....heads and cam is the crucial point but also those gears have to go..:)
I had an aquaintence of mine tell me that he could beat my stang when it was still stock with his 428 Pontiac 69 Firebird...well maybe-went to the track and I clicked off a 13.9 with gears, exhaust and pullies to his 14.8 and his 2.** whatever gears..he'd kick me in top end,but on the street -forget it....
sorry I rambled--gears..thats the ticket for a low buget start...forget the cam-if the heads ain't flowing then its a bottle neck...
Gears are great, but he was asking for horsepower estimates. Not really possible without knowing about heads, cam, headers, and induction. Even how the short block is built makes a bunch of difference.
I like the Performance Trends program to get a little insight into what an engine might produce. Maybe more important is where in the spectrum of RPM, the power is produced.

Yeah- Iknow Rev-I just rambled...LOL
You are right though-too many unknowns to harbor a guess...

I'll try better now, I was rushed last time
289 w/ newer '84+ 302 heads
new push rods
headmen full lenth headers w/ 3" collectors & w/ 2½" pipes that end at the rear tires on the side of the car, not under
45,000 volt coil
9mm wires
pertronix elecitric points
I can't remember the specs on the cam- will post later
timing gears
peformence air filter
looking at a holley 4bbl
670cfm 4bbl holley street advanger seires
c4 3-speed auto
2:80 gears
the 289 was a 2bbl, lower end was rebuilt
plz ask for what else, besides the cam do u need to know?
it's on a '66 coupe

I would be afraid to guess at that. I think we need more info there Kaspar. but i tend to agree with 6T9pony;)

Well....it was rated at 200 Bhp stock with 282 lbs/ft of torque. Not a real powerhouse. I'd say you MIGHT make up to 250-275 Bhp....But that things gonna be a dog....with 2.80s....C4.....not too much torque at all.....It'll be in the 16s...IMHO.....

I also agree..that thing would be one heck of a Highway Hauler though...LOL
Gears and shift kit would do wonders for your combo...;)

C Pony Go is correct. Gears and a shift kit would prove to be the difference of night and day with your setup. Don't forget a stall converter too...;)

it's mostly going to be my crusier car, just with power to back it up. Power steering, A/C.
This is my first car that I have really redone. Later on I plan to find a '65 2+2 or fastback to mod into a really fast car. For now I just want something quick and will pick up the women-hehe.
Yes, a shift kit is going in along with a 1000rpm stall converter, still not sure on what the gears are going to be. I don't want something too high, like what I have now, but I don't want something too low like 3:73, it would scream on the freeway, which is what I am mostly biulding this for.
Here's the specs I promised on the cam:
_____Duration at .50"_____lift_________lobe
______In.___Exh._____In.____Exh._____Sep.
Hyd__219*__226*___.480"___.475"____112*

373s espically on a automatic won't kill ya on the highway. I run 410s and a 5 speed and turn about 26-2700 rpm at 70....livable....
Call a supplier for a torque convertor and give them your mods..they will be able to help you choose the right stall for your combo...
My 3.25/1 axle with a C-4 and 235/60/15's run 3000 RPM at 70 MPH. That's about as much cruising RPM as I can handle.

The Carb sounds a little to big for that cam. WHile stock heads do suck...No doubt about it.....You can get a cam that puts more of a duration, and lift on the exhaust side to soften the performance blow that stock heads have on the exhaust side.
Also, some mild polishing and cleaning of the chamber, runners, and valve pockets will help out. Also look for an exhuast system that has a cross over, and a good set of long tube headers to help scavenge the exhaust out quicker and more effeicently.
Those steps should help build some impressive numbers out of a 289 using stock heads. Just gotta find away to over come the Handi-Cap.
Wienand Stealth is a good street/strip intake. I'd reccommend it before I reccomend the Eldlebrock Perfromer RPM, or the Performer intakes.

What do u sugest for a good cam. I don't want something to rough, for that it's not going to be a racing car, but something that makes the whole car shake at idle. If u look in the new summit mag, it's a comp cam, says it's bring back the muscle car sound.
If u can, look it up for me and tell me what u think of it.
The headers are full lenth and are about three to four feet long. No H-pipe, I like the indepentent sound of each side of the pipes.
