Question Breather on '66 289

A few questions:

1) Which sticker should have come on my breather originally ('66 289 2v), the one with orange and black checks, or the one with white and black checks. Both are orange with black lettering in the center part of the sticker.

2) Exactly how does the snorkle work on this thing? There is a flap inside with a spring and what appears to be a thermostat of some kind? Is the flap supposed to open up at a certain temperature (pull in more outside or "cool" air rather than the warm air off the exhaust manifold)?? The spring on my flap seem very stiff and I doubt it ever opens.

3) When you paint one of these things, how do you protect the inside? Is it cad plated or something? I assume paint is out of the question for the inside, since it will contact gas vapors.

Any help will be appreciated.
