Default question regarding air filter

i have took out the air silencer on my '89 5.0, and it has a K&N air filter (the stock replacement kind). I kinda want to get one of those K&N conical ones that i see sometimes. Will there be any increase of HP or is it not even worth it. If it is what is the part number or dimensions of the filter i need? i dont knwo and i even emailed K&N and they sent me the part number, but when i took the part number in to order it in they said it was non existant ? if you can help me thanks alot

You wont get any noticeable hp gain from a conical filter. Probably the biggest reason to go with a fenderwell mounted cold air kit is to make room, and clean up the engine bay a little bit. Don't go with a conical filter that stays in the engine bay though, you'll be sucking hot air from the engine compartment through your motor instead of the denser (cooler) air from the fenderwell.

The stock air box is a cold air kit. There isn't much power to be gained by changing the air filter setup. You don't want one that pull hot air from under the hood unless you just want it to look good.

Lightbulb Cold Air

You can buy a K&N cold-air intake kit (part # 57-2502)
or a Moroso kit (for $95.).

They are worth a few HP over the airbox but the real value is in a slightly smoother airflow than the stock system allows as well as slightly cooler air coming in. It probably won't win you any races but it sounds cool (like a big, honking four-barral carb at WOT) and a dyno might show a 3 or 4 HP gain.

I have the Moroso kit (easy installation) and I really like it but I have no illusions about it doing any more than it actually does. A small improvement in airflow velocity and a tiny performance gain.

Your call.

Cool C&L engineering

I ordered a C&L Inlet Pipe ( cause I like the way It looks) anyway ,I had some questions ,and there happen to be one of the engineering group personel close by . So I bombarded him with questions.. and after every thing was said and done.. He told me that during there Dyno tests ,they had 6 different stangs ,all modified differently ,and stock to . and with all there tests they found out that with the stock airbox - the restrictor , with a K/N ,made more H/P on all stangs then any other combo (including the conical cone) But something else they learned !!!!
By deleting the MassAir bracket that secures the MassAir to the fender ,they were making even more H/P . It's like this in between the airbox and massair you have what they call .. the bellows . ( that is the section of tube between airbox and Massair) what happens under torque,is the motor lifts and changes the angle of airflow at the bellows. By disconnect the bracket that secures the Massair ( i should say deleting it) the whole intake tract moves up and down with the engine torque. thus promoting cleaner air and more H/P hope this made sense
