Default how do you know when muffler needs replacement??

well besides the rust, i mean do mufflers sound weird when they need replacement? i hear like a cracling noise under my car, my mufflers are very old btw, but i dont see any holes or anything, also hear something making contact underneath like a knocking sound...any opinions?? thnx
