Default This is opposite of normal thinking, right?

Got an AUTO, when at idle upon start up or any other time for that matter, when i drop it into 1st gear it goes in with a BANG! and a lurch, better have the brakes on, I'll tell ya. BUT, and this is weird to me, if I give it say 100-300 more rpms and drop it in gear, it goes in much smoother and no lurch, well, way less of a lurch for sure. I'm a T-5 drag racer, this is my daily driver, it's a 89 GT with all the trimmings, I am a AUTO TRANS dummy, what do you think?

I scared the crap out of the ARBY'S window girl the other day, "thank you for visiting Arby's, come again!" "Okay, I say" drop her in gear and "BURP CHURP!" away i go! LOL!
