![]() I'm purchasing a 65 mustang that is billed as original. The VIN says that is has a 289-4V, but it only has a 2V. It appears to have the original air cleaner because the sticker says 4V. But I'm not so sure. Does anyone know if the 4V air cleaner fits with a 2V?

![]() Basicly all the diff between a 2v and a 4v, is the intake manifold and carb. 2v is a 2-barrel carb, and a 4v is a four-barrel. Yes, the air cleaner will interchange, because the top of the carb on both is the same size, mainly just for stuff like that.
U said the vin says it's a 4v, what is the vin #?

![]() I think all the 289's with 4 barrel carbs also came with dual exhaust. The non hipo was the "A" code rated at 225 hp (gross hp).

![]() You are exactly correct. The type "A" has 225 hp. The car does have dual exhaust. From what I can tell the only thing that is not original is the 2 barrel. I believe the 289 with the 2 barrel has 200 hp.

![]() The 289/2bbl./single exhaust is the "C" code and was rated at 200 HP. That's what my '66 coupe had for many years until I decided to hod rod it a little.

![]() With your vin, u should have a 4bbl. But it ounds like someone put on a c code 2bbl. I hope u guys know that the ratings for the HP were way under what they really were. The 200hp c code was more like 220; and the A code was more like 240.

![]() 'Cause horse power ratings didn't go to sae "net" until '72 and before that the engine was tested outside of the car with all accessories removed. NO power steering, power brakes, Air conditioning, not sure if the fan was removed or not , nut all those accesories alone are worth probably the 20hp but not on the plus side. When in a car the motor would be making more like a 180 (for the 2v) at best. And that's when new. A worn 30 year old motor is would be making concideralby less. To give you and example my stock 2v cleveland that ran 16.29 in the 1/4 mile was only making close to 160hp. Pretty week, I know. I hope that clarified the whole hp rating thing.
