Angry I need help for my 68

Well I have a 68 Mustang coupe with a 302 engine. The engine is running great, the problem is getting it to stay on. As long as the transmission is in park or neutral the cars stays on but if I drop it into any gear, 1,2,D or R it just stops. I can force it to stay on by giving it some gas and holding the brake. After I get it to stay in gear it works fine, until the engine cools and then the same happens again. Can anybody help me with this problem. I don't know if it is the tranny or engine or what? Thanks People and Mustangs Rock!

Also check for vacum leaks . Old cracked hoses, vacum lines at back of manifold, etc.

It still sounds like a vacum leak. How about squirting some water/brake clean/either on and around the carb, manifold etc. See if the idle changes any.

Theres a vacum line that runs to the tranny also. Make sure its plugged into the valve and not loose. Right rear side of tranny.

Hook up a vacuum gauge and see where you are...

Also, since you mention that it acts differently when the engine is cold... it may be an issue with your choke and/or mixture settings.

Did this problem start all of a sudden??

Did you do work to engine, then it started??

If so what did you do??

Could be intake leak at cylinder head or where the carb bolts on.

Also, could be carb. problem.

Need somemore info to help you out.

Does the car smoke at all when in park?

My brother had a smiliar problem with his car. Car sounded great but when dropped into gear it died. We checked out the car left and right for leaks of any sort and found nothing. They said the carb needed to be replaced since it had been rebuilt once before and probably wouldn't last so we did that. At the same time he decided to change out the manifold as well. Turns out on the underside of the manifold there was a long hairline crack in it. Combination of both made the car do pretty much what you described. I'd check the manifold out especially if it's stock assuming you have a new or fairly new carb. If not it could be the carb itself and may need replacing or a rebuilt if it hasn't had one before.

I think back in 68 they didnt have a vacuum kick down i think it was cable operated, so i really think it is going to be a problem in the carb or manifold.

eveyone is right I but, someone may have changed the cam and you might need a stall in it. does it try to pull off or flash when you put it in gear. pull you really need to check you vaccume secondary to your c4 modulator valve. i have a orginal 68 it has a vaccume on it.
