Default Door Handle Removal/Install

The exterior door handle on my 73 seems to have popped a spring, and I cannot open the door from the outside. When pulling on the handle, the handle does not pull evenly, leading me to believe it is a spring.

The interior handle works fine.

Luckily, the local boneyard had a 73 mustang where about the only thing left was the door handles. This also allowed me some "practice" in installing/removing the door handle.

Unfortunately, I don't see how I can easily replace the handle. The plastic fasteners which attach the levers to the handle are old(duh), and I can't think of a decent way to prevent damaging the fasteners while removing the levers. Also, I have been unable to find any replacement plastic for this application.

Are there any tricks to replacing the door handles with a special tool or such? Perhaps there is a "replacement" for the plastic?

Thanks.
