Default "Temporary" engine

While all my friends were out last year beating their cars, mine sat idle because I killed the 302, and decided that I'm building a 410 for it. Well, I just got hooked up with a 347 shortblock. Trading for some stuff I have laying around. Thinking I'm gonna throw my new Canfield's on it, throw it in the car until the 410 is done. It has an X303 cam in it now, prolly taking that out and putting in my .544"/.558" 294/306 cam in, Victor Jr, 750 Holley, pro-shifted TKO II Sounds like at least a low 12 second ride until the new engine is done.

Whatcha think?

Why is a 410 crazy? LOL More power is always better! I'm not sure what this 347 will run, but it's gonna be better than the 12.81 I was running with my "stock" 302. That, and I'll have the car out for Steel Valley Nationals, and Fun Ford Norwalk. So, that's a GOOD thing.

I wouldn't even hesitate to do it. I'd rather be racing than watching from the sidelines. You'll probably have to give the x cam away or sell it on ebay for money towards the 410. LOL.

My wife was a "temporary" girlfriend to get me by too. Took her out on the first date, and she never left. That was 15 years ago, prolly the best thing I ever did. Who knows, might end up being really happy with a 347.

Well, long story short. I decided to go for it. Got the 347 shipped from Iowa, it showed up on Thursday. Took it down to the bare block today (It was FILTHY!) new bearings, new rings, and I'm gonna run my big nasty cam in it too (Brand new X303 Cam and new FMS lifter for sale! LOL). Found some stuff I'm not to crazy about, namely the pistons. No spray for me this year, amongst other things. Learned alot about stroker pistons today, so that's a good thing.

She's back up to "shortblock" status, and the car may actually be out in a few weeks. I'll let you all know!

I'll start the bidding at $1.00. Glad to hear you'll be rolling in a few weeks.

Well. now that I think about the piston issue, I think the X303 is going back in because I KNOW this thing is coming apart, and I don't want it to take MR. NASTY cam with it. So it looks like the X303 will be offered up to the track gods, and every run I get will be considered a "bonus".

The more I think about these pistons, the less I like them. Long story, but trust me on this one guys, stay away from the stroker pistons that have the bottom ring around the wrist pin.

Does the current bid stand AFTER it comes out, without removing any bolts?

WTF? Am I on drugs? Putting together a motor that I know is a ticking time bomb? Gotta drive it I guess.

Whats the deal with the pistons? Thats normal to have the pin pushed up in to the oil ring on 331/347 stuff. In fact, I dont think you can get it any other way. The 347 uses a 3.4 crank and most likely a 5.400 rod. That leaves you with a 1.100 compression height. They have them listed at 1.090. (.010 in the hole) If you tried a 5.090 rod that would need a 1.41ch piston, but I think the bottoms of the pistons would hit counterweights. My new T-Trim motor is going to have a 1"ch.

I just REALLY don't like that bottom ring having NO support above the wrist pin. Evidently (when it was in Iowa) the ring rotated around so the bottom of the 3 piece ring had it's gap out there unprotected. With me? Well, it bent down and scratched the heck outta the cylinder wall, pretty bad. I'm just worried that's gonna happen again.

Yes, 5.400 rods in this one. My 410 cid pistons have the rings pushed way up, and away from the wrist pin. This is the first 347 I've had intimate knowledge of, so maybe I'm just worrying about nothing. ?? We shall see.

UPDATE: Talked to tech support at Ford Racing (they built the stroker kit) the guy attributed the piston ring gap issue to the last guy that put it together not paying attention. DO NOT put the oil control ring gap above the wrist pin. (DUH!) He said I'm good to go there, .030" end gap and we're even good for 150hp worth of snow.

So, I said to myself "Self, (that's what I call myself when I talk to myself.) Self, put Mr. Nasty cam back in, and let's see what we can make a 347 do. So it's back in, the X303 has about 12 tubes worth of grease on it and saranwrapped, with matching numbered grease covered roller lifters.

Heading out now to degree Mr. Nasty in. Now all I need are some rockers, and it's GAME ON!

Good luck with the engine from a fellow canfield fan.

I beat everyone else with a stock block regardless of what heads they are running AFR 185's Trick Flows it doesnt matter. The air gets as bad as 6400FT here where I am at and I still go 106mph.

I would be going 110-112mph at sea level in a full weight car and I weigh 220 lbs.

I couldnt be happier with my Canfields.

Just reading some old threads and I had to comment on this one!

Thanks to YOU guys, I do believe this "temporary" engine found a permanent home, and is alive and WELL!!!!

I NEVER would have done this without this forum, just something I wouldn't have even thought about.

At 11.061 @ 123.21 MPH N/A, I'm glad I let you all talk me into it.

THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!
