Default Hoses attached to rear axle, 1966 Mustang

I was just crawling around under my '66 Mustang 6-Cylinder Automatic and I noticed a broken hose at the rear axle.

This hose seems to come out of the trunk, just forward of the rear axle on the driver's side. The other part of the broken hose attaches to a connector on top of the rear axle. Another hose comes out of there and attaches to a solid line (like fuel line or brake lines) which goes forward toward the engine compartment and attaches to another connecter on the driver's side near the master cylinder.

The connector on the rear axle seems to have the solid brake lines for the rear brakes coming out of it.

What is this hose for?

I'd post pictures, but my digital camera is nowhere to be found.

Thanks for any help you can provide.
