![]() Ive got a 67 fastback with a 302, T-5 trans, Tri-y headers, Holley dual plane high rise manifold, 600 cfm Edelbrock carb, and 3:70 gears. I feel that with this combo that I should be shot into the back seat when I punch the gas but it really doesn't begin to "pull" until I get up around 3000 rpm. The 302s cam specs are not known but I do have a pretty rough idle and poor vaccuum so I know that it isn't stock. I have already checked the compression, vaccuum leaks, timing etc and all of that is fine. Should I be looking into recalibrateing the carb richer, getting an H-pipe?????? Any input is appreciated. This has all come about because I just added the 3:70 gears from a 3:00 set and the only big difference that I see/feel on the low end is that the car revs up faster. I don't notice much difference in the way that the car "pulls" until I get up to 3000rpm and then it feels good. Thanks in advance for the help.

![]() Well, you say that you've checked for vacuum leaks and the timing...there went my first 2 guesses.
Did the car have good low end torque b4? I would tend to believe that it's either a timing or fuel problem. How about a couple of simple checks. Try looking down the primary bores of the carb--ENGINE OFF PLEASE--while a buddy puts the pedal to the floor. Watch for a good accelerator squirt and make sure that the butterfly's are opening ALL the way. The 600 Edelbrock should be fine for the car...mine always ran too rich though...any black smoke out the back when you get on it? If so then you're running too rich, which would give you poor low speed performance, and would get better as RPM increased. Start with the simple stuff and eliminate step by step. BTW... I switched to the 500 cfm Edelbrock on mine, works great straight out of the box. Better throttle response than the 600. ------------------ 66 GT Fastback 5.0, 5-speed, cable clutch, JBA's, 3.40 gears, EFI coming soon? |

![]() Could be numerous things...
timing, jetting etc like was previously mentioned. No low torque... could it be a mismatched cam? Just a thought. ------------------ http://www.comports.com/2bav8 |

![]() I had a 302 in a 78 musangII.
and with 10;1pistons high energy cam alum intake and holly600. and heads were ported. it had no tork untill3000 also. It had a C4tranny and after a 3000stall speed was put in it was a screamer if your cam has too much duration. you will not have low end tork, but at higher rpm's it should start pulling. The hipo parts you mentioned are for higher rpm performance. if the heads are ported, and have a single plane intake that hurts the low end too.. A 302 needs to be rev'ed up to make power anyways.I don't see one putting you in the back seat at 1500rpm, unless your seats broken.. ------------------ 1989GT,373grs, B&M 2500Stall, shft kt organic clutches and Kevlar band. ![]() Since you have noticed that you have a radical cam, from the poor vacume etc. Obviously this is quite a radical cam, and is affecting your low end torque. Its probably a high end power builder. I forgot if you said you had stock heads or not, but if you do, its probably made to make power above where your stock heads can breathe. Its very important to know how you engine is put together. Switch cams, find one w/ good low end torque, with a good powerband.
Good luck, Sky |

![]() If you port the stock heads, especially the exhaust side, they can do pretty well up to 6000rpm..
Not like alum racing heads, and less than 351w heads. but if your not going to radical, it will work. Sometimes bigger is not better. I don't see major tork from a 302(even w/low reving tork cam). It just won't run like a 351,390 or 428, you gotta rev it up a bit. ------------------ 1989GT,373grs, B&M 2500Stall, shft kt organic clutches and Kevlar band.
