Starter Problems-Mustang 67 289 - C4

I have a little problem with my starter and the flywheel, if I install the starter normally, the Starter Drive remains making contact with the flexplate, so I am using two spacers to put the Starter a little bit rearwards (but at start time is making a big noise). WHY? Do I forget some spacer between the Crank and the Flywheel? or is my Flexplate difformed? Any Ideas?
One more question my FlexPlate gear has 180 teeth on it, is that standard ?

I recently put in a rebuilt starter and had the same problem. It turned out that the rebuilder had used a longer starter drive causing it to remain engaged. It made an awful noise. I exchanged it for another and it works fine. You may have the same problem.

It's always a good idea to check the old part against the new one... ;-)

The problem happens after a complete engine rebuilt (without changing Starter Drive or FlexPlate. Prior to that the starter was working great.
Any other Ideas?

Sounds like the flywheel is the problem. What did the teeth on the old one look like? I have not heard of 180 teeth, you should have one with 157 teeth, P/N F1219

If you did not change the flywheel or starter the only thing it could be is a bad starter or the spacer between the motor and trans was not installed. If the teeth were worn on the flywheel it would just grind it wouldnt stay ingaged.I also never heard of a 180 tooth flywheel if its an automatic it should have a 157 (big bell) or a 164 (small bell) there is a smaller flywheel but only in mustang 2,s.I found this out when my brother n law's 71 mach1 starter went bad. it had an 302 but it also had a c4. well i was rebuilding a cleveland that had a new starter and c4 so i let him use the starter and it did exactly what you describe! It would make an awful niose while starting but it would start then the starter would stay ingaged to the flywheel! thats when we found out there are 157 tooth and 164 tooth flywheels. My brother n law goes and buys a new starter and again it does the same thing!!! it turned out to be a bad starter and was brand new. so the next starter done the trick. I hope i have been of some help.
