![]() My friend was wondering what all he will need to put a 302(carb) in his 68 coupe? It has a 200 straight six right now. We already asume he needs diff. motor mounts and a diff. bell housing (it has a 3spd in it now).
Thanks |

![]() I've never done the swap but I can tell you that the i-6 cars have smaller brake drums, very weak rear axle, four lug suspension. You could swap the motor but I dont' know how long the other components would last.

![]() I am planning on doing the exact same swap as you, except with a 289 instead of a 302. So no difference really. I was thinking that the transmission wouldnt hold up, but will it? What kind of 3speed are these?
I have an 8.8 rear end, will that fit? Could I use it to replace the rearend/axle, it also has drums on it too, could those work? Let me know what you find out, and I will do the same for you, it looks like its gonna be a good project. Drop me an email if you want to.. ![]() skyman,
My buddy was planning on e-mailing you (not sure if he has yet). But anyway he has already upgraded to a 9" with 5lug and added a V8 drive shaft. He has also did the 5 lug conversion up front (not that effects the swap) He didn't up graded the drive line just for the swap (they went bad and he replaced them with better stuff) but he was thinking a head to the swap at the time though. ------------------ 88LX 5.0 5spd 1 5/8" shorty headers, Off road H-pipe, Flowmasters, K&N, ASP 3" Crank pulley, 3.73's, ram air, 75hp NOS Dry Kit http://www.angelfire.com/ns/PurgingPony/50mainpage.html |

![]() I have an inline six 68 coupe also. I have done a lot of research on swapping to a V8. The swap to a modern fuel injected 5.0 appeals most to me. There are several companies which specialize in these swaps. One good source is Windsor-Fox. I'm not sure if they do carburated 302 or not. You would definately have to replace the transmission, radiator, drive shaft, rear axle, and brakes. Some suspension work may be required also to get the car riding good. It can be done, and would be a very enjoyable improvement over the six, but it does require a lot of work and careful planning.
Windsor-Fox has a good web page, there are also several good disc brake coversion kits available, a five lug conversion for the front would be needed to match the larger rear end also. I hope this info helps you. |
