![]() I was wondering what the average redline for a 289 is. As far as mods., I have full Edelbrock induction, cam dynamics cam (power range starts at 2800rpm) I'm not sure of the specs., headers, 2 1/2"exh., h pipe and 4:11 gears. Is there any way to extend the redline? What exactly determines the redline? Just curious but never really asked.

![]() It's basically stock and I'm running a 10:1 compresion ratio. 7000 seems kinda high. I've been afraid to push it past 5300.

![]() I have no fears turning my 289 to 7500.
That's a bit out of my power range, but I'm not worried about problems with the RPM. I try to keep things around 6800-7000 RPM, depending on the setup. If your cam isn't coming in until 2800 RPM, you're definatly shifting to early. What are the specs on the cam, 2800 RPM is pretty high for a mainly stock motor. ------------------ http://www.comports.com/2bav8 |

![]() If you have a stock bottom end, I would limit
your RPM to under 6K. The limiting factor is the cast pistons and most importantly the stock rod bolts. If you were to upgrade to good Arp Rod bolts and forged pistons you could rely rev that 289. 7000+. Regards, BillGear |

![]() Going from my personal experience any good street strip cam like what I have in my 302(.512 lift 230 degrees of duration at .050) or what you have in your motor doesn't make power past 6000-6500 so there would be no reason to rev it any higher.

![]() There are a lot of things to consider when spinning a 289/302 above 7000. And how fast will it spin up to that RPM level. Weight removal in the rotating assembly, and removal of any drag like using a windage tray, strenght by adding a main girdle support, light weight rods, slugs and lifters allow you to RPM quicker and higher. The cam choice to determine the power band, along with the intake and carb. Also take into consideration the valve springs, stock springs will usually start the valves floating around 6000 RPM. My max power is made between 7000-7600, and the engine was designed to make power in that range, since it leaves at 4800. 8500 on a stock 289??
