![]() I have a 66 mustang 6 cyl.auto. I want to covert to an 8. I want to do a complete change over from front to back. What rear end would fit that has a 5 bolt pattern with disk brakes?? Also what gears would be good for street use, Highway Rod runs, and have good accerlation?? I also want to covert the front wheels from 4 to 5 bolts, they don't have to be disk brake would I have to change alot of the front suspension?? I am talking not sending alot of $$$$. Presently I doing the body work and paint. Would I need to tub the rear fenders if I went with 10" or 12"tires in the rear?? I am also looking at a 289 or 302 any suggestions which way to go. Any help would really by appreciated.

![]() A lincoln Versi rearend will fit in the back, that is a 9 in rear and comes with discs, but is very expensive, other than that there are no other rear ends that come with disc, I would suggest finding a 65 or 66 9 in, from a junk yard and buying a disk kit, the fronts are a little easier, I bought the California Mustang disk rebuild kit, cause it came with new spindles which is what you will need for the change. It isn't suspension that you will have to change, it is the steering, that is why you need the new spindles. you will need to run V8 steering. I don't know about what size tires you can sqeeze in. but as for engines, the 302 and 289 are really basically the same in performance, you just have more cubes in one. I would take the 302, cause of all the stuff that is out there for them, more specifically strokers and what not.
good luck on your project I am about to finish mine, did the same thing, 6-8 conv, except I am throwing in a new svo 351. |

![]() You would need to tub or flare to fit the 10 or 12" rims.

![]() curries are good rear ends, but you will pay for it. I think a mustang salvage yard is your best bet for just about all your needs, you can pull the rear and your steering and spindles and get them for dirt, but you will have to refurbish all the steering stuff, cause of junk bushings.

![]() Mustang 66, You are really taking a big bite. The max you can run on 65/66 is an 8.5 inch without a mini-tub. My 65 FB runs a 10.5 inch slick, mini tub, shortened 9 inch, ladder bars, Koni coil overs. Whatever rear section you buy, it will have to shortened to run the larger meats. A complete 9 inch, shortened, with lets say Mark Williams or Strange gears, 31 or 35 spline axles, would run around 2000.00 to 2500.00, not counting the mini tub. I think a lot has to do with the amount of HP you plan to push thru this thing. To give you an idea of the stance, you will find my FB on the cover page of www.fordmuscle.com this month.

![]() You can fit 10" wheels with 315-wide tires in the back with special 17" rims that go for about $450/piece. Danny Banh Performance sells them.
