My rear end

Yes i did post one earlier, but i needed to put some more info.
Ok i a running a 302 with 350 hp. I have a C4 and am using 3.00 gears now, not posi. I am looking for 3.55 gears so that i can do some damage on the street. But i can't go any higher than this cause i am only 16 and travel quite often.. I sue my car for school and travel on the highway every weekend so i can't go with a 4.11 or 4.30. But i just need the 3rd member and i don't have one. So my question is where is a good place to look?

Junkyard. Any car pre-1986 or so,that had a v-8 motor should have a 9inch rear. A truck rearend would most likely yield a higher gear ratio 3.55 etc. Check the rearend tag,it says the gear. Just make sure of your number of splines aswell.

Or you can spend a little more money and buy a gear,@115.00 and a posi,limited slip,or locker and 3rd member. I have a 3.70 limited slip 28 spline waiting for a buyer,in my garage,$150.00. But im in East Tennessee.

If thats too much cash, some mustang II's and ford trucks and vans in junk yards have 8" rears with nice gear ratio's.

Wow, $1000. I got my 8" 3.25 Traction-lock from Currie a few years ago for $650 to my door in Houston. It even had a special billet part for extra strength.(can't remember what it was, but recommended by Ray Currie). Not a 4 spider gear outfit though. Anyway, Ive been completely satisfied for several years now. I even fot the installation kit which includes new nuts, crush washers, gasket, and the proper lube for the Trction-lock. As I said, I'm happy. Good luck with yours.

At $700, I'd grab it. Good used 8" gears will only be harder to get. I'm convinced Currie will sell nothing less. Not an advertisement. Just good parts. They are.

I think some of the Mustang II's like
1974 or 75 used the 8 inch rear end.
The 4 cylinder models often came
with the 3.55 gears. check the wrecking yards.

Billgear, with all due respect, I don't think you'll find many "8 center section Traction-locks in the the junk yards. If you want a selection of good gear ratios, Traction-lock's, etc.......well, you know where we said to go.

Yes everyone keeps putting 8" rear ends, but i have been told by numerouse people i have a 9" rear end. I however cannot tell without the tag. so any help there is appreaciated also.

Sorry, I assumed it was an 8". In general the 9" has a bump in the center section if you look at it from behind and the 8" center section is a smooth dish. Check out perogie (http://www.perogie.com/) they sell both kinds of 3rd member.

Another quick and handy check on the rear that I've heard is to get out your socket set. The bottom bolts on the 9" are supposed to be impossible to get the socket on, and you would have to use an open end on them. I've never paid any attention to this but I know for a fact that you can get a socket on every bolt on the 8", so it probably works. So if you would have to use an open end, then it's a 9".

Your car should have had an 8" inch in it from the factory, unless it originally had a 390 in it.

Well that is a good mention that you say that.. cuase it acutally did come with a 390! But i have heard that if it had a 390 that it was posi. and i am just curiouse if someone has changed it but i cannot be sure. Yes, my 67 gt came with a 390 2x4 ventura carb.

I'm not sure about the "every 390 got a posi" thing, although it would make sense. It could be that it has one, but it just needs to be rebuilt like mine did.

What axle code do you have on the door plate?

Also, get under the car and look at the front of the center section, is the tag still on it? What does it say? The tag is a stamped metal piece about 1"x3" and will be covered with 30 years of dirt and grease.

The tag will tell you 8" or 9", gear ratio, and if it has a traction loc or not.

example-- 3.00 gears will have 3 00 in the lower left hand corner. 3L00 is a 3.00 gear with traction loc.

Get greasy.

They quoted me $1,850 for a complete 9" rearend with 3.55 positrac including axles and brakes. They said I had to purchase this complete kit since my car is currently running an 8" reardif. How did you guys manage these sub $1000 quotes?
