View Full Version : shifter question

82 GT

I test drove an '88 GT the other day and noticed that the shifter was a little stiff and took a little effort to change gears. Is this normal for a stock shifter in mustangs of that year? Also the clutch petal was a little firm too. As far as the guy knew the tranny and clutch was stock.
One more question, how can you tell if a clutch is ready to be replaced? It started to engage about 2inches from the floor. I didn't feel any slipage while I was driving.
I am considering buying this car so any help on these questions would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks

Shifters get sloppy - not tighter - with age. The '88 very likely has an aftermarket shifter. Not surprising on a 13-year-old car.

To test a clutch; In an empty space, put the car in fourth gear and let the clutch out slowly. Watch the tach. The sooner the engine stalls the better the clutch. If the tach goes way up before a stall, the clutch is slipping. Generally, if it grabs at 2" and 'feels' good; it's O.K.
