Cool electric fan?

I have a 65 with a 5.0 efi engine thats putting out approx. 260-275 hp and I want to put in an electric fan. How big of fan do I need? Will a 16" 2300 cfm work?
BTW I just put in 3 row rad. and a high flow water pump if that helps.

Definetly get the high flow water pump and radiator. Get an aluminium radiator they work better. Also when I switched to an electric fan I had to go to a higher amp alternator cuz i was draining the battery.

It would be a good idea to get the biggest fan that will fit. With the 3 row you should still have enough room for a big fan. I have an aluminum rad the size of a 4 row and use a fan made for the 65-66 mustangs by hot rod air, even though I still have a few heating probs. The extra draw on your elec system is goibg to give you probs, I went to the gm one wire 100amp alt.

A electric fan is a good idea. I have one, but need a bigger one, not pulling enough air. I was wondering wear to get an aluininum radiator, I have been looking for one.

Griffin sells wonderful Al. radiators for almost all applications for lots of $$$ ($500-600?). I've heard they are worth it though I don't have one.

I tried to use electric fans, even two at the same time, puller and pusher. My problem was that the fans were not reliable, lasting only 6 months or so before failing. Now I use a Flex fan and an auxillary pusher fan for warm weather that I turn on and off manually as needed.

The last one (auxillary electric 16") I got from O'Reilly with a lifetime warranty for $120. This was about the 4th or 5th that I have bought in the last 5 years.

I have a griffen radiator high flow water pump and an eletric fan gotta love it. Only had it for almost a year set up like that but have barely put on 2000 miles since then. If I drove the car more I'd end up installing another fan. But the higher amp altenator is neccasary.

Yes, the Edelbrock water pump that I have now is helpful. Don't ever buy a FlowKooler water pump. I had one of those and it lasted only about 20,000 miles. FlowKooler cost about $65 is and made in Taiwan. The Edelbrock has ball bearings instead of brass bushings and is much higher quality and cools about the same for about $165.

The set up I have now cools extremely well. Recently, my thermostat stuck wide open and my car ran like squat. It was cooling too well. Took me a little while to figure out what was wrong since it coincided with a new carb installation. I wasn't used to too much cooling capacity.

Car runs great now and won't go over 180 even hot lapping at the drag strip.

You can get them for $181 from Summit.

On the other hand, no one has really answered my question. What size of electric fan do I need? I know I will probably need at least a 16" fan. Where is agood place to get one? A little help here please.

OK, it took me awhile of going through a half dozen catalogues and magazines. The $181 Griffin Al. radiators that you refer to in the Summit catalogue are generic outfits. They might be able to be MADE TO WORK WITH ALOT OF EFFORT.

I'm looking at an application specific Griffin Al. radiator from NPD in an ad on page 44 of the Nov.2001 issue of Mustang and Fords. The cost is $574.95. It should bolt right in.

A 16" fan is the largest I could fit behind and in front of my '66 4 row brass radiator. The front pusher fan took some modification. You can get these fans from a variety of manufacturers almost anywhere.

The 16 incher should be fine. By the way that the griffen for 181 can be made to hold right with ease. As long as you are comfortable with drilling four holes on your radiator support and 4 on the thin edges along the top and bottom of radiator. 1/4"x6" screws and the set up should be right. The perma cool are fine if you don't drive over 40 miles on a hot day.
