Question cams & carbs

Im working on a 68 "C" 289 (2v)

I have been looking for a camshaft and Carburetor. I found a summit cam I think I like. Im looking for somthing that will give me more on the top end keep in mind I will be driving this daily. I what a somewhat smooth idle and to get this I think Im looking for more rotation vs lift.

So to the question, What do you have in your Mustang and how do you feel about the performance?

Whats your thought's on this subject?

I know that this will lead me to look at the intake, heads, Pistons, and crankshaft. Please feel to comment.

Im my 66 coupe Im running a Edlebrock cam, carb and Intake. This cam has alot of lift so the car runs at a ruff idle. But very fun to drive :-)

I was at the exact same spot a few years ago. My '68 289 V2 had about 90,000 miles and I wanted to pep it up a bit. I went with the Edelbrock Performer package from Jegs. The cam, carb and intake are a matched set and seem to work well together.

Only problme with this approach is that it starts you down the mod path. While I had the engine apart to change the cam, I changed a lot of other stuff (water pump, timing chain, fuel pump, etc.). After that comes headers, rear gears, rebuilt trans, driveshaft, etc.

The car runs good, but I have a lot of blowby with the compression rings. Also, the 289 V2 had pretty low compression to start with. I need to do something with the short block.

That leads you to the dilema of rebuilding the shortblock or going with a create motor. Both options have their +s and -s.

All of this, like all hobbies, costs $$s and time. Good luck,

Thumbs up

Your right on the money. I will have no choice but to rebuld the block, and I plan to. The car has been sitting for sometime. I also plan on replacing all the pumps and other engine components. This was my first car I ever owned so it has alot of sentimental value. My wife agree's surprising enough. Im hopeing to keep the cash under $15,000 to complete the car including the paint. We all have are dreams. So my options at this point are wide open. Thanks for the reply to this thread.

Your lucky your wife is OK with it. Mine calls my car the 'thing in the garage that eats money'.

My car is in the paint shop right now (been there for 2 months). I had them take it down to bare metal then make all the panels straight. I'm painting it the same color, so I didn't do the trunk, door sils, etc. It still costs about $3,500.

A thought on the engine, if you haven't already made up your mind to rebuild. Ford Racing has a 5.0 aluminum head crate motor (M-6007-XE3) that is rated at 345 HP for around $3,000. The motor has all the goodies (e.g. 9:0:1 compression, roller cam and rockers, etc,). It is a straight bolt in that only needs induction and 50 oz external balancing.

I'm really concidering this route because rebuilding my 289 to get 345 HP will cost about the same. Also, you never know what will happen at the machine shop.

Just a thought.

I use a CompCams 268 HE in my '66. The truth is, without a good rebuild, decent heads, intake, carb, headers, and exhaust, the cam by itself won't show too much improvement.

If you want to do it incrementally, start with free flowing exhaust, Performer or Stealth intake and a 600 cfm Holley or Road Demon. Save the new cam for when you do the rebuild.

Electronic ignition would be a good addition as well, and will always be there when you rebuild.

When you do get the cam, don't make the "bigger is better" mistake. Best idea is to call the tech line of your favorite cam grinder, tell them your application, and then take their advice. Believe me, they want happy cam customers.

My $.02.

If you have been looking in the summit cat. then You probaly have seen the one cam kit they offer for the 351w(it is the same grind as the early 90 lightnings came with). I have used that in many street 289-302's with real good luck it maintains a stock idle character but gives lots of punch to about 6000 depending on intake and head combo. If you get a 351w cam all you have to do is change your firing order to the 351/302HO firing order.

I have to check that out. I have to learn more about my heads, pistons and carb. I will need to deal with them as well.
Thanks Shaggy
