![]() I am planning on doing some mods to my car, but my friend warned me about notifying my insurance company first.. I was wondering what you guys do with your insurance when you do stuff to your cars.

![]() dinomite,
It is not necessary to inform them of mods, but I do suggest carefully documenting the mods & saving receipts.also if you have a camcorder, video the whole car inc mods. photos are good to. This will assist you if there is a loss. I my state ,& I believe most others, You will not be reimbersed on full value of mods, only what the mods will add to market value of the whole car. I hope you never have to use any of the obove suggestions. |

![]() I lost a 92 LX 5.0 Convertible 2 years ago in a house fire...they didn't even pay me for the damn radio in the car...I threw in exhaust, lowering springs, and a cam all within a month before the fire, and they told me that was my loss, not their problem...upgrades are the owners liability....so f*** 'em, they don't need to know $hit

![]() I imagine that it would be a good idea to have your car appraised every couple of years. That way your are covered.

![]() What my friend told me was the they would make you pay more, even back-charges, and possibly even drop your coverage if they found out you made performance mods to your car. I'm not worried about not being covered for the upgrades I make, I'm worried about being covered. I can understand them notcaring if you did something like exhaust or springs, but what about somethign major, that made the car more powerful like a supercharger or different (read: bigger) engine?

![]() I once coverted an old Camaro from a 307 automatic to a factory (crate) 350, a Muncie, 3.73 rear, new springs and tons of other stuff to accomodate the new power. Did I tell the insurance company? Three guesses and the first two don't count. All they knew was that I had a '71 Camaro with a 307. Fine with me, as they wouldn't have paid for the engine and other stuff. I also had all new body panels, interior and trim, which I did tell them about when I had an accident that almost totalled it, but the adjuster never even noticed the new engine and other performance equipment. They paid to get the car repaired and I had it a long time before selling it to finance my then-new Mustang.
Keep your upgrades to yourself; telling the insurance company is unnecessary, in my opinion. |

![]() Thats what I was thinking before my friend tried to scare me. I would just do my thing, and if I ever got in an accident, they would just think that they were paying to fix a regular stang. I just started thinkin about if/how they would find out....I'm just a kid and so I don't know much about how insurance works in general (eg, what actually happens when you get into a crash, do they come talk to you and look at stuff?).

![]() I agree with everyone else, and if they ask you if your car is going to be used for racing the answer is NO! Don't even think of saying you might take it down to the local dragstrip for a little fun just once. I had an insurance guy ask me that once. Just my $.02
