View Full Version : Killed a 96-98 Cobra, an 01 GT and got stomped by a Fox.

Last week I left the st races bc I didnt want to get busted. This time it was a lot smaller and it was mostly muscle cars. So I stayed. This Cobra kept reving at me all night so I asked him to run and what he had done. He kept saying it was stock but it sounded real mean and people were telling me different. I beat him by about 2 cars to everyones suprise so they set me up with a Fox that they knew would kill me. He told me he had heads, intake, and a cam plus he had some meaty a$$ tires with dumped exh tips. Well he pretty much kicked my *** but it was only about 2 car lengths. He pulled me off the launch but that was it, I just couldnt reel him in. The last race was against the 01 GT. He beat me before I had my gears so I realy wanted this one. I ended up beating him by about half a car before the cops got there.

That GT was really fast. It was definitely faster than the cobra I raced. Its hitting 13.7-13.8 with just a cold air induction. Its a vert too. I was very impressed. They totaly knew that the Fox was gonna kill me. I knew it too but I didnt care, I wanted to see how fast he was. He had heads, cam, and an intake and the only reason he beat me is because of his launch. These tires had to be at least 11 inches wide, he jumped 2 cars in first, I actualy pulled about half a car in second and we were even untill 4th with him about a car and a half ahead. As soon as I get my controll arms installed Im saving up for some drag radials.

I'm glad you confirmed it. I had beaten very cleary (3-4 cars) a 96-98 Cobra with my GT, and I thought it could of been a bad driver or something...
So what do you figure you run with the new setup on 1/4 mile?

Lizrdkng, I figure I could probaly run a 13.5-13.6 on average now with my stock exh, heads and intake. I hope to do even better once I get my longtubes, cat back, and controll arms in. I know its a pretty big claim but Im beating people that went to the track with me last month before I installed my gears and had it tuned correctly, so I saw their timeslips. That new GT is realy quick for only having an induction setup. Its a good 13.8. StreetStang37, I remember a huge argument here a few months ago about whether a 96-98 cobra was faster than a new sohc GT. I was totaly defending the Cobra, quoting hp numbers and all that crap, well Im here to tell you that I was totaly wrong. That Cobra I raced was probaly a 14 flat at best and that new GT whooped its *** before. I am admitting right now that I was totaly wrong. I dont know how or why its this way because the hp between the two cars differs greatly. But then I have seen a few new GT's that couldnt crack a 13 all day as well, but there ARE a few of these cars that are just plain faster than others. I have beaten other new GT's even worse than I beat that Cobra last night but this particular one, and there are others like it, was FAST for a stocker.

I have to admit, I thought my car would be faster than it was before the gears and such. Then i remembered the weight factor. what do the new GT's weigh? I know my Cobra would be around 3500-3600, with 1/4 tank of gas, spare and jack removed, and skinny's on the front. Ah, it doesn't matter. Some cars are just faster than others.

Sounds great to me Sky, A few techncians from my dealership and some of my friends are going to Palmdale on February 10th. By then I should have my exhaust and controll arms installed and ready to run. Bring your camera and post the runs here. If you can run a constistant 13.5 you will probalby beat me, but not by much. I have had more races in the last two weeks than I have had in the last 2 months and Im just as suprised as you about beating the people that I did. I thought that the Cobra was going to whoop on me because he at least had an H pipe, and that fox I beat last week definitley had 410 gears because he was shifting way before me and winding it out more than me also, but I dont know how much motorwork he realy had, he claimed he had pistons to heads but he really should have beat me if he did. Im not used to winning so much so I guess thats why I keep posting them.

fastang - I know, I know...its been in my sig for about forever now. But, I am getting it. Christmas, gettting married (honeymoon in the US & UK Virgin Islands for a week) and building a new house has put just a little crunch on the finances but it will be coming soon.
I have set an order date of mid-March. That way I'll have it once the weather starts to get somewhat nice here in C-Bus.
I just had my LX dyno'd a couple months ago, here are the results from a 248J Dynometer:
289 RWHP
312 RWTQ
My coupe weighs in at 3040 w/o me and a 1/4 tank of gas. So based on my combo, weight, current HP & TQ, I am going for 500 HP at the flywheel or about 440 at the rear wheels which will hopefully put me in the solid 11 sec zone on my BFG drag radials.
I will keep everyone posted on the progress.

You should race a real 96-98 Cobra. I have a bone stock motor in my 97. Less mods than you. I bet you ain't running 12.3 either. Maybe the guy you ran was sleeping or spinning.
Whatever it was, congratulations on the win, but don't even try to say the GT is faster than a 96-98 Cobra!!! I beat Vorteched 99 GT's, let alone N/A GT's. Ford may have F'kd up the 99 Cobra but they built the 96-98 Cobra right.

Ok How the HE11 did you ever run a 12.3 on a STOCK motor? A 12.3 will probalby beat most supercharged 5.0 GT's as long as the motor is not built as well, but no stock cobra EVER ran that good of a time I dont care what year it is. I will gladly race any STOCK 96-98 cobra you hand me. I guess your drag radials must have dropped 2 and a half seconds off of your ET since your
"going for 11's on a stock motor" Very few of those Cobras ever saw the 13's stock. And who the he11 are you to judge my combo anyway? The car I raced WAS a Cobra and it DID have exh mods at the very least.

Its called having a good combo. All I have is bolt-ons. You obviously have never seen a Cobra run like it is supposed too. So don't be spreading false info about them. They are rated at 13.99 @ 101.9 stock and you obviously raced a stock one. Just adding a 4.30+ gear will take a Cobra to the very low, low, 13's. Add pulleys, offroad H, timing adjuster, and some good driving, and you end up with the following timeslip.

Oh, yeah, the 12.3 has been backed up multiple times at a totally different track and I have plenty of eye witnesses. Although, if you got out more often, you would find that there are a bunch of Cobras running the same and better times than me with the stock motor. Like, Bob Cosby, the Corral.net owner, his 99 Cobra ran 12.31 @ 110 on drag radials as well.
I have no reason to lie to you. I will be at multiple FFW and NMRA races this year and also running the 4VNA class at the Modular Shootout.

How am I spreading false info about the Cobra. And if you add pulleys the motor isnt stock anymore and the car itself is definitly not stock with those gears and H pipe. Ok maybe some mag rated the 96-98 Cobra at a 13.999 but who gives a $hit. Facts are that most of them did not see a 13 off the showroom floor. I am not putting them down and I NEVER said that the GT was better than the Cobra, I had to really mod my car to beat them. You seem to be doing realy well for bolt ons, congratulations. I never said that wasnt possible. I just said it wasnt possible STOCK. Adding all that crap doesnt make it stock anymore.

I never said my car was bone stock. I said my MOTOR is bone stock. And for the record, my friends 96 Cobra with only Flowmasters ran a 13.55 @ 105. This car still had the stock 50,000 mile air filter with silencer.
Its just like every other car. When a car is bone stock, it takes serious driver skill to get it moving. You obviously ran a poor driver. A win is a win no less so I am not taking anything away from you. Just like the 5.0, there are some that can't get out of the 15's to save their own life, but there are some that have ran low 14's and even broke into the 13's stock. Its all about driver skill at stock power levels. I think you were just making rash statements because of one Cobra you beat. Just because you beat one, you wont beat them all, so don't just write them off like that.
And, I don't read magazines as gospel. The stock ET I quoted you came from my owners manual and the run was probably made by a lousy driving Ford Employee. Please don't make me scan that for you.

There are still a lot of new GT's that will beat a Cobra. In fact I would bet that LizardKings could. But Im sick of arguing. Im not writing cobras off at all and I do have a LOT of respect for them. I was just suprised at how well this GT is performing.

I side with Jason on this one but the truth is you never know how crappy the other driver is or the true condition of the car, so if somebody can run anywhere near low 14's it's possible to beat a 96-98 Cobra, just not mine or Jason's. http://www.mustangworks.com/interactive/msgboard/wink.gif
I have driven a 99GT and was impressed with the torque but it just doesn't have the upper end balls of the DOHC Cobra, especially with gears. My car is far from stock but it isn't that modded either. I have never seen a 99/00 Gt come close to me. BUT I have dusted some 96-98 Cobras too and wondered what was wrong with their cars when I would beat them so badly. The fact is, some people can't drive and some people have fast cars out of the box but to generalize about the Cobra being slower than the GT is downright silly.. I'm kidding around here but you get the idea.

Although, 5th gear pulls like a MOFO now, I wouldn't think about using it for a highway race where you seem to capitalize. http://www.mustangworks.com/interactive/msgboard/smile.gif
I should warn you that even though I still have an all stock motor, I have every bolt-on available now for the Cobra to include BBK Longtubes. I have Weld ProStars all the way around with skinnies on the front and 15x10's on the back and MT ET Drag slicks are now used exclusively on my car. Almost a full drag suspension. I am going to shatter my best times in signature this coming race season.
I will be at the NMRA race in June at Maple Grove, we should meet up there. Or I will be at Cecil County Dragway on opening day Feb. 23rd. I might also be at Atco Raceway in New Jersey next Sunday, Feb. 9th.

I'll try to meet up with you at the Grove Jason. I live about 30 mins from there.
With a complete drag set-up and 4.56's, I doubt I could pull your 60 ft times but I'd try. http://www.mustangworks.com/interactive/msgboard/smile.gif I plan on going with decent lower control arms to complement my uppers and KYB's but a drag car it is not. My drag days were spent in my LX but this car is much easier to launch. The best I ran my LX was a 12.4 on drag radials and I beat that car with my Cobra from a 5 mph roll by 2 cars to 90 or so. My future plans are to install the SHM 5.2 or 5.4 stroker motor this summer since I have reason to suspect a slightly damaged piston. Maybe it will be done by the time you come to town.

I have to say he is right. It is a stock motor. When you buy a motor or long block you get the block, pistons, heads, not usually intake, etc. You dont get pulleys, exhaust, gears etc. So his motor is stock. Yes his car is so damn fast it frustrates the hell out of me too. I have no idea why I cant pull a decent 60' with lowering springs but I can't, and its not me, Ive let other people drive it too, it wont hook!
Cobras perform really well with gears. Im thinking about going to 4.30's in my car too.

There is a difference between a BONE STOCK CAR and a BONE STOCK MOTOR.
My motor is BONE STOCK from the Throttle Body down to the oil pan. The intake has never been removed.

The reason 4.30+ gears work so well on the Cobra is because Peak HP is at 6100 rpms and there is NO torque down low. We need all the gear we can stand to keep the rpms up between shifts and stay in the powerband. We also shift at 7000 rpms.
Once I get my 11.99 timeslip on this stock motor. I will be shipping the entire motor to Houston Performance for complete rebuild to include, 11:5:1 Compression, Maximum Ported stock heads, and lopey-azz custom regrinded cams. Then I will top it off with a new HCI Intake when they finally come to market. Peak HP will be above 7000 rpms and I will step up the gears to 5.13.
