15x8 backspacing on 69 Mach1?

Does anyone know what the backspacing should be for a 15x8 wheel on a 69 Mach1? I`m gonna be ordering new wheels and I need to get it right. Thanks

There's lots of variables such as whether or not you have a stock suspension, what size tire you want to run, etc.

In general, 4.5 - 4.75 will work well.

Have you considered a 17' or larger wheel? You could fit a much larger tire because the larger diameter rim clears the front ball joints.

I`m planning on a 245/60R15 for the rear and a tad smaller tire in front. The reason for my post is that I talked to a guy with a 69 mach like mine with 15x8 /4.5 b.s. and he had cuts in his sidewall. Just not sure if I need a 4.75 or 5.

Something is wrong, he either had had very large tires or he doesn't really know his backspacing.

I can tell you this. I ran 15 x 8 Cragar SSs with 4.25 BS and a 255/60/15 in the rear of my 70 convertible. It looked great and would barely rub on occassion when the backseat was full of passengers. It had a real soft factory suspension with lots of travel. It literally gallopped over the Pensacola Bay Bridge on those memorable hot summer nights.

But I digress, a 245/60 would have never rubbed.

In the front I had 15 x 7s with with off the shelf backspacing. These never rubbed and looked great.

4.5 inch backspacing ...roll the lip under the fender

With 4.5 BS and a 245/60, he won't need to roll anything

Thanks for the replies, I just saw a 69 MAch 1 with 17" wheels. I never thought of going with 17`s, until now. Anyone know what sizes fit the wheel wells(front and rear)with a new but stock suspension? Thanks for the info

An excellent choice, fifteens are old school.

The 17s will allow you to really fill the fenderwells since they'll clear the front ball joints. You can go as wide as a 9 and 10 inch wheel with 255s and 295s, but that's pushing the outer extreme of the envelope and will require perfect backspacing, rolling the outer lips, and banging around on the inner fenderwell in the rear.

A more sensible choice may be an 8 and 9.5 wheel with 245/45/17 and 275/40/17 tires. My personal favorite is this size front but with a 285/40/18 in the rear to give the car some rake.

On my 69 i have 15x8 with a 4.5 bs and run a 275/50 rear tire with no problems. The rear of the car is a little bit lower than stock. They fill the wheel well perfrectly. without any modification
