17" wheels & backspacing

Does anyone have a definative answer as to what Wheel backspacing works on "66 289's? it seems as though there is no information about this available any where. All the writings ( magazine, tech articles etc) tell what size tires ( 225/45/R16, etc) and wheel sizes ( 16 x 8,17 x 8) But they all leave out what seems to me the most important fact, the backspacing or offset. What Really works for both front and rear wheels? I'm ready to purchase some wheels but I dont want to make a mistake and get something that wont work.I'm leaning towards 17 x 8's. Any comments guys?

Call or e-mail Mustangs Plus. I believe they have lots of experience with this and sell 17"x8" wheels. Catalogue says perfect back spacing for no wheel rub in 65-73 Mustangs with 245/45/17's. Doesn't exactly what the back spacing measurement is though. Call them or e-mail them or check their web site.

I have 17x8 Torq thrust II's on my 66' Coupe.
The backspacing is 4 3/4. I run 235/45/17
Yokahoma tires, it doesn't rub. Check out
my web page for pictures. Look under suspension...

Mustang & Ford magazine has a good article on what will fit on a 65-66 and 67-68. It in on November 2000 edition. They advise 17X7 with correct backspacing of 4.250 in and for the rear you can go up to 17x8 with correct backspacing of 4.500in. You should check it out, it has other alternatives. The only thing I don't advise you is to subscribe to this magazine. I paid a full years subscribtion, and Mustan& Fords seemed to lost my account. They are sending me letters with dilenquent payment bill notices, I tried communicating with their subscriber to clear this discreapancy, and noboby responds. They better not send to collections or I will be an unhappy camper.

I appolize for my comments on Mustang and Ford magazine. Today I was able to clear the descreapanies on my account. I have to admit that human errors can occur to anyone. Mustang and Ford magazine is an excellent source for acquiring information. I reccomend it to any foreign or domestic reader who is into Resto-mods for classic Mustangs and other Fords.
