1967 Mustang Fastback Acid Dipping?
Hi,
I need some advice... I'm currently restoring a 1967 Mustang Fastback, which has lot of rubbery gooo all over the car. The previous owner did a really bad job restoring the car, the quick and east way. The only option I have is to dip the car but I've been getting a lot of negative feedback from quite a few people about dipping. They are saying that the acid cannot be neutralized and causes the car to be eaten from the inside out. Is this true? I need some real advice. I will be taking the car to Redi-Strip, is that the best thing do to? Please let me know your opinions on this. Thanks |
Imagine dipping a fish into liquid and pulling up just the bones.
Its going to eat every piece of rust off the body. You may not have a body left. Then you still have to treat the metal before paint. I like sanding to bare metal and using something like POR-15 rust preventitive to treat and seal the metal. You can use any type of paint over it. We painted a rearend with POR-15. Then we beat it with sledge hammers and it did not chip. Ask you local body guys what they use. good luck, |
Thanks for the advice, I've started stripping the paint, gooo and bondo. I found POR-15 at a local automotive shop. Really appreciate your help! :)

Re: 1967 Mustang Fastback Acid Dipping?
Chemical dipping strips the car inside and out, very difficult to rinse completely. I stripped mine with chemical stripper on the outside, but I wouldnt want to strip it inside and out.
Another alternative is media blasting, some use baking soda, some use plastic media, but it doesnt eat metal. I just prefer to do my own work, I guess I'm cheap. I used Tal-Strip and a floor scraper with a 4" blade. It cut through all 4 repaints down to the original paint in one coating, but took 2 more to remove the original paint and primer. I finished with steel wool and laquer thinner to clean and neutralize it. |
