1968 GT 500

Does anybody know of how many original 68 GT 500's were made and are left? Is there some kid of registry? I question this because I think I may have found one in my grandfather's forest behind his house. I saan old piece of rusted car (there's alot of them around his place) and this car has body lines like I've never seen before. I kow that it is a Mustang but this has such an interesting looks to it. If it is real, I'm gonna get it outta there, if not, I'm still gonna have to revive the former Stang.

There were 4,450 Shelbys produced in 68. This includes fastbacks and convertibles in the 350, 500 and 500KR's. I would think there should be a Shelby registry somewhere on the net. What is it that makes you think it could be a shelby?

Well, the body is slightly different than other earlier Mustangs that I have seen. However my eyes may be playing tricks on me! The engine inside is HUGE!!! Which makes me think that is has the 428 inside, which I pretty sure the 500KR's had. My grandfather passed away last year and he's the only who probably knows if it is a 500KR or not.

Both the 500 and the 500KR had 428's. The 500 was the "Police Interceptor" FE, while the KR was the Cobra Jet. It's just about impossible to tell a 428 from a 390 from a simple visual inspection, or a 332 for that matter. An FE looks like any other FE for the most part. And to the untrained eye, a Cleveland looks pretty damn big! Look for a VIN tag on the drivers side front fender. Compared to a regular 68, it should have a firberglass front clip and tail-lamps like a cougar.
