28 or 31 spline?

Short of pulling my axle how do I know if my rearend is a 28 or 31 spline? Its an 8" but its not the original and I don't know where the original owner got the rear end.

pull the axles out and count and see how many splines are on the end of it.

Yeah like I said "short of pulling my axles" how do I figure out if I have a 28 or 31 spline rearend? I was just wondering if there was a short cut.

Hey Sunshine,
I have a way that you can tell, look at the ends of the shafts where the drums attach. In the center of the lugs, where the axle sticks out, it should be solid and flush if it's a 31 and it will be recessed if it's a 28.

I have an even easier way...The 8 inch never came with 31 spline axles.
