289 "hipo"

Hello all, I was just wondering what is the difference between a regular 289 and a "hipo" and how could one tell these differences by looking at the engine? Thanks for any reply.

The hipo 289 (or k-code) was a solid lifter motor. I'm not sure how you would differentiate it by looking at it.

Start it and listen for valvetrain noise, a slight ticking. Check the oil, if its alright, and the noise SHOULD be there, its got solid lifters.

Don't say that, now He'll just go out a get a bad 289, with messed up lifters-lol

Normaly I would tell u everything about the HiPo, but I'm so tired right now, All I can remember is compression, the HiPo had 10.5:1

my motor makes a clicking sound my dad say its the lifters but i dunno
i guess i can tell my friends its a hipo

how do i chek them ?
i think the lifters r the original ones i dunno
also havent chanfged the oil in a while

289 HiPo is characterized externally by:

VIN # stamp on block near pan, usually right rear edge where block/pan meet.

Heads with casting numbers 19, 20, 21.

Aluminum water pump (open impeller type, no steel backing plate).

Swept free-flowing exhaust manifolds looking more like headers.

Large alternator pulley

Larger harmonic balancer

Holley 4v carb (instead of Autolite).

Engine dress up kit

Engine/Car is more valuable when VIN's match.

Solid lifters (when engine is running there's unmistakable engine valve clatter)

I was just looking at a 65 fastback yesterday and it was advertised as having a 289 Hipo. It is a rather crappy looking G.T 350 "clone", asking 12,500.

One more to add to Jeff's list, if it is original, no vaccum advance canister on the distributor.

Do u have the stock 289 heads with adjustable rocker arms?
