Unhappy 289 will not start when hot!!!!!!!!!! Update

Everyone who guessed that I have headers are right on target. I have now replaced the ground cable, battery to selinoid cable, and the seliniod to starter cable is in new condition. I ran the car today and hoped the new ground cable would fix the problem. NOPE.... I did notice the headers running right next (ie pratically touching) the starter. The starter was to hot to touch.

Sounds like a problem called heat soak - you are basically baking the starter to death. There are two options that I have used in the past to reduce the amount of radiant heat from the headers. You can use a special heat tape/header wrap made for this purpose and wrap the header to insulate the area where the header passes by the starter. The other is to make up a heat shield to fit between the starter and the header. The shields I have made in the past consisted of sandwiching a piece of heat resistiant material which is avaliable at most speed or rod shops, between two thin pcs of aluminum. You will probably have to get creative on how to mount it based on your situation. Good luck!

I have my battery relocated to the trunk. When I first did this conversion, I just grounded the battery to the frame in the trunk area. Big mistake. After due consideration, and slow cranking while hot, I ran a ground cable (#2) directly from the ground terminal to the starter motor. I can't tell you how much this helped. Anyone with the battery in the trunk, run a big ground cable directly to the stater motor bolt.
