302 into a 66 Fastback
I my looking to buy my first Mustang. I grew up under the hood of a 65 coupe and my father decided to sell her before i had a say in it. To make a long story short. I was offered a good price on a 66 Fastback 2+2. The car needs to be completely restored and so on. The problem is the motor. The person selling it stripped the 289 and threw the parts in a box, along with everything from the transmission. SO at this point the motor is just done in my opinion along with the trans. I have a friend that has a 5.0 liter, 302 sitting around. I know this has probly been asked a million times, but how hard is this swap. I plan on carbonating the motor instead of fuel injection. I am just looking for how difficult this swap will be. I have experience with motor swaps in Jeeps and Firebirds but never a classic mustang. Any information would be great thank you.

It would be just the same as replacing it with another 289, no problem. What are you using for a transmission?

Re: 302 into a 66 Fastback
I dont know yet, both of the transmissions are bad. I want to covert the car over to a stick shift. SO if there are any suggestions of a good four or five speed i am more than willing to listen, in reality i dont know too much about transmissions in mustangs so any help would be great. My next question is will the 302 drop in or will it need new motor mounts?

Re: 302 into a 66 Fastback
Motor mounts are the same, the 289/302 are the same except the stroke. I would go with the 5spd (T5 out of an 87-93 mustang) if your going to swap over to a man pedal, though im not sure if the holes are all there already for it or not...

5.0L will sit right in. I have that in my car as we speak

Re: 302 into a 66 Fastback
You'll have to run an electric fuel pump. The EFI 5.0 doesn't have anything for a manual pump.
Also, the balance is different. 28 oz vs 50 oz. You need to match the flywheel or flexplate with the balancer. |
