351 in a 66 coupe
I want to put a 351 in my 66 coupe but my main consern is gas mileage, if you all know what I mean. So if there is any one out there who has this kind of set up or is just running a 351w in their car and could tell me, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx, Justin |

I have a 351W in my 65 FB. Mileage is not bad if you use an AOD. For example, I get around 15 mpg with 4.57 gears on the fwy. You wouldn't want to know the city gas milage with over 400 hp.

I run a 351W in a '69 coupe, right now, with full-length headers and a 2-barrel holley, stock cam, and pretty much stock everything, it gets around 14. We are putting on a bigger cam, a 750 cfm 4-barrel, so it will probably run about 11 or 12 then. But like that other post, that's not too bad for a car running 375-400 horsepower.

This is crazy, but I have a 289 with a 4v. carb., 4:11 gears and a ridiculous cam that gives me around 8.5 mpg. Oh, well, the performance is worth it since it's not a daily driver. Differnt strokes for different folks. I would love to drop a 351 between the fenders but that will have to wait for a few more years.

Justin,
I have a 351W in my 69 and it's mainly stock and can get 16-18 mpg. It will be up to you on how you equip your car but with the right parts you can get 18 as long as you keep your foot out of it ------------------ 69 351W Sportsroof deluxe |

My 351 Falcon gets about 10MPG driving to and from track. If gas gets much higher it will still get 10 MPG,just cost more to get there.
Restomod, when are ya going to take the '65 to track again? From the altitude you stated sounds like you go to Palmdale.I'd like to see ya run if that's where ya go. ------------------ '62Falcon 351W '58 Morris Minor 289/C4 "Just Falcon Around" |

Well, I perchased my 351 yesterday, form mustangs plus, they deal those fomoco 351, with gt 40 heads and cam, victor jr intake and all that stuff, supposedly 385hp and 377lbs of torq, so now all I need to find is a good tranny place to build me a c-6, thanx for all the info guys. I shall be on the road again shortly.

When you find a place to build you a tranny, ask them the difference in prices between a c4 and a c6. c6's are supposed to be the "beefed-up, high-performance" trannies, compared to the c4, but i've heard it can be better to have a c4 because you can make them tough enough to handle all the "excessive" power, if there is such a thing, and they said c4's are quite a bit lighter than c6's. I guess it just depends on if you are going to race your 66 or not. I have a '69 coupe with a 351 and c4, and it handles 375-400 horses just fine...

A C4 should work just fine behind that 351W.They can easily be made to handle the HP you have. The C4 in my car behind a 351W built similar to yours, has LOTS of passes at the track and doesn't skip a beat.

Best c4 & C6 guy in the country today, is probably JPT, Jim Performance Transmissions in Eaton Rapids MI, 517-663-0578.Provides a lot of tranny's to the guys running Fords in the SS classes. 500-700 HP should not be a concern. My ATI C4 has held up extremely well also.

I talked to this tranny place in Sacramento, and the guy there told me that it was going to cost a lot more to build the C-6, and that he recomended that I run a C-4, cause that is what he has been doing for ever. That news makes me happy cause I already have a beefed c-4, so production on my mustang has sped up a bit. Got a couple of more days on that engine. Oh I am getting all excited talking about it.

Cobra66, I have a '65 that currently has a 289/c4 setup (stock stuff) and I wnat to put a jacked up 351w in. I hope to use the c4 behind it. Do I need to have the c4 beefed up also? It was rebuilt about 8 years ago, less than 10k on miles.

Maxout, Why not beef up your 289? You can make lots of power with a 289/302. 425+ at the crank is very do-able. You should beef up the C4. Kevlar parts are the way to go. Check with ATI in Sacto or JPT. They both advertise in ND on a regular basis.

Something MUST be done to the C4 if you install a shift kit. Enough horsepower to bark 3rd and you may go through 2 stock rebuilds a year.
My average was 2 a year with a 10" converter and 400hp froma 289. I'd run them till they acted wierd (locked up/wouldn't shift/slow shifts) then take them apart. If you plan to build more and more horsepower, do it right and don't buy a converter for a C4. If you plan to buy a converter, save up for a C6 and converter, because the more hp you toss at the C4, the more often you'll break. Nothing sucks worse than breaking at the line in a money round. *sigh* ------------------ '66 Coupe - heavy mods http://www.acsol.net/~intruder/66coupe.html |
