351w and t56 in a '66 Coupe
I have a big list of things I plan on doing to my '66 mustang. Right now it has a 289 with 302 heads, a c4 automatic tranny and just about everything else is original. I plan on swapping in a 351 windsor and i want to put a 6-speed tremec in this car. Does anyone know how much it might cost to get this done. I'm willing to whatever I can in my spare time on my car, but I go to college and work so I have little time to work on it. Any ideas on price and difficulty would be appreciated. thanks.

i hounestly would take it all back to stock, but this is just my opinion. i would give just about anything to have the 289 and c4 back in my 65. it seems after you do dramatic changes to the car the more problems you end up haveing. i have been through a 351 windsor and the 302 i have now has been rebuilt twice. i am working on a 289 now to put back in it. just my advice. but im not really one for the speed, just like the prestiege of haveing it.

I would imagine it would cost u more than u have to have somebody else do it. (especially since your in college)

well, I know it's gonna be expensive, I work my butt off during the summer so I can have enough money to fix my car up. I know there is a kit for a 5-speed tremec, but I don't know if there is a kit for the T56 or what I would have to do. Just wondering if any has done anything similar in their car or if I am the first.

Re: 351w and t56 in a '66 Coupe
A t56 is not going to be cheap, not by a long shot. I understand you are not worried about money, but understand when you think you have the money budgeted in, lots of little costs will add up. On something like this, there will be a lot of little costs.
A 5 speed will offer a nice overdrive, and they are much cheaper. Take in the fact that there is lots out there in cyber space for this swap, would be my pick. What are you looking for out of the 6 speed over the 5 speed? Second, although the 351w will fit in the car, it’s not going to leave a lot of room between the shock towers. With the small block stroker kits out there now for relatively CHEAP, would be my choice hands down. Next time I put an engine together for my car, going to be a stroker 302. Why? They are cheap and with aluminum heads are just about the lightest combo I can put in it. The lighter, the better my car is going to handle. Just some advice. There are guys on here running some great times with strokers....give it some thought. Ryan |

The T56 transmissions usually run about $1800.00 to $2200.00. Also you will have to modify your floor for the trans to fit properly.
