Unhappy tranny woes

My c-4 was working fine the other day but after i adjusted my carburator today the car was not going in to any gear. plenty trans fluid, automatic. I would give it alot of gas in gear and not even a little jump or putter along.

Fluid level is fine...Did you check to see if the shift lever linkage has fallen off??

Does it make any noise?? Did you try Reverse?? You can pull pan, easy to do, and check and see if the linkage is moving the manual valve. Also, if the pan is full of metal.

Good luck, let us know what's going on.

I put a new filter in and have less than two hundred miles on it. Everything was working fine until I adjusted my carburator. Could there be something wrong with the vacuum line going from the transmission to carburator or the vacuum thing on the transmission that it hooks to. Thanks

Also, When in park the car stays but when put into another gear, any gear, it just rolls down the driveway. Theres no catch.

The vacumn line won't stop it from going in gear. Only will not allow it to shift up.

You said you changed filter?? Did you put the little check valve back in that fits under the filter?? Also, is the filter in right?? Sealed good and submerged in fluid?? No fluid=No pressure=No move in any position.

Sounds like you have a screw up in the filter area. Check this stuff out and get back.........good luck too.

Gearhead, that's what it sounds like to me too. If he has a leak where the filter attatches to the valve body, his tranny oil pump will just suck air producing no line pressure and no engagement at all.

I realize this is your thought. I'm just agreeing with you.

Rev,

No problem here, I'm glad you're agreeing. Hope that is the problem. Cheap to fix.

Did you put the valve back after the filter was removed?? The filter holds it in.

When I pulled the filter off nothing came off or anything. There was a hole towards the front of the filter area where I was able to run pinky finger up in it but did not feel anything. What does the valve look like and where does it go.

I had sort of the same problem with my '68, coupe, automatic. When I put it into gear it wouldn't shift right away..I would have to let it warm up a bit and then it would catch..Since I don't know anything about tranny problems I took it to a mechanic and he said one of my vacuum lines was damaged. He repaired it and now it works fine. Take my info for what's worth. Good luck.

Can a torque converter just go bad. I cut her on was checking for vacuum leaks and noticed a clacking. At first I thought it was detonation for some reason then I went under the car while it was running (Don't do this at home kids) and noticed a clacking of some sort coming from the front of the transmission.

Yep, convertor can go bad. But usually, not always, it makes a lot of winning sounds before.

Also, did you check the convertor to flexplate bolts?? Are they there?? Broke??

They appear to be in place. Also, could the transmission fluid go bad.

That would certainly do it. No line pressure then no nothing.
