Post 5speed behind a 390

I have a 67 Ranger(my tow vehicle) with a 390. I'm wanting to put an overdrive in it so I can use it for long trips. I've seen AOD conversions for $2500(ouch). What about a manual 5 speed. Anyone heard of this?

Thanks,
Mark

I'm sure there's a way to put a tremec or richmond 5 speed in there. What tranny do you have now?

It still has the old original 3speed. Like most all, the column shift broke and it's now in the floor. It's sloppy, geared long, and has no overdrive. I think a 5speed would make it more practical and fun to drive. I would consider an AOD if it's affordable. Has anyone ever put either behind an FE motor?
Thanks,
Mark

If it has the old Toploader 3 speed you are in luck all you have to do is buy a tremec and it will slip right in with you old belhousing and clutch you might have to shorten the driveshaft a little though.

Tell me more Shaggy. First of all, how do I determine if it is an old Toploader 3 speed?
Secondly, have you seen or do you know someone personally who bolted a Tremec up to an FE motor?
Your saying all I'll need is a driveshaft?
That would be killer.

Thanks again,
Mark

The tremec was designed after the ford toploader so it could be a stronger replacement tranny originally. When you are looking at your three speed is the acces cover on the side or on the top of the tranny if it is on the top than it is a toploader.
