Question 65 289 Exhaust

Anybody have any suggestions on exhaust? I have a warmed over 289 (600cfm carb, headers, cam, 040 over, etc) and am looking for a dual exhaust system. I am considering a nickle plated one from one of the Mustang vendors, do they fit well? Or would I be better off getting one custom bent? The local muffler shop can go to 2.5", is this big enough or should I try to go bigger? If I went this route, I would use the flowmaster mufflers. Any suggestions?

2 1/2" pipes are absolutely the largest I would consider. I've tried 2" and 2 1/4" and both work well on a 289 or 302. 2 1/2" pipes will kill low end torque, and unless your revving past 6k, I don't think you'll find any benifit to them. My car runs pretty good with the 2" on there right now, but I'll probably go with 2 1/4.

I would definitely go the custom bent, local muffler shop route. The kit systems are fine, but most of the time you can get a setup that is bent to fit your car for the same price. As for size, I would go with 2&1/4 if your car will remain with that engine combination.

My 68 is a 289 bored .060, roller cam, roller rockers, ported heads with 1.94 valves. Hooker headers and 2 1/2 inch mandrel bent pipes all the way out and the factory dual tips are welded on the ends.
Flowmaster 3-chamber mufflers. The car is an AOD with 3.50, 9-inch rear. Car runs very good, sounds VERY GOOD. But, believe me there isn't any room for a larger dia. pipe.
