![]() I looked as hard as I could for several years. After all was said and done, I narrowed it down to AFR, Edelbrock, and TrickFlow. For the money (including all the things necessary for my application = $2000), I found that the TrickFlow TW heads pocket ported were my best bang for the buck. After a few months, I still feel that is true.

do they come with the v. springs and rockers? what else would i need theyre going on a 289 i think they had #s like 1.90 < whatever that is is it going to bore my engine to a 302? |

Then why are you asking for advice " Rev" just told you that he likes TFS the best dollar for dollar deal. Then you say no I am getting Edelbrock heads. If I tell you most likely need hardened pushrods, ARP head bolts, Head gaskets, roller rockets,( the size depends on what size cam you are running), valve covers and gaskets, and you need to make sure that your headers match up to where the ports are on the heads. Along with your intake man as well. Are you going to tell me no you are doing something else as well? Anyway that is what you need give or take some bolts for the headers and intake, along with some more gaskets and stuff. One |

![]() Don't be too hard on him, one. I'm sure that I drove everyone buggy around here trying to decide on what heads to buy. Thanks for mentioning all the "extra" stuff needed to do a good head installation.
On a side note, I've heard that the new Edelbrock Performer heads are "new and improved". Might be true even. I would like to see some independent testing though. Rev

![]() Fordmuscle.com has an article on their website where they test a number of heads, including stock 289 heads, ported 289 heads, Edelbrock, Holley, Brodix, World, and other aftermarket heads. It should make for a good read, unfortunately you have to shell out either the $5 bucks for a monthly membership or I think $15 buck for an annual membership.
I have yet to subscribe, but I probably will go ahead and shell out the money to see their testing. It's all done on a flow bench at Mondello technical school. Hope this brings some good info to ya.

![]() I was able to access that article on the internet for nothing. It was one of the deciding factors in my Al. head purchase dicision. Do a search and check out that article, it's worth the effort.

![]() By the way, the "1.90" numbers is the size of the valves in the heads. They were probably 1.90/1.60 or something similar to that. That's the size of the intake and exhaust valves. And no, they have absolutely nothing to do with boring out your engine. And you cannot "bore" a 289 up to a 302. You could add a different crank and get that many cubes, but not by boring.
Boring means increasing the diameter of your cylinders in your engine block. By doing this, you gain cubic inches. But with the normal .030 overbore you don't gain anywhere hear the 13 cubic inches between a 289 and a 302. If you bore a 302 .030 over, it comes out to about 306 cubic inches. A 351 with a .030 overbore comes out to about 357 cubes. Boring and stroking have nothing to do with your cylinder heads. You cannot gain cubic inches by adding better/different cylinder heads. |
