65 v8 mustang power steering rebuild

Does anyone have any advice on rebuilding a powersteering unit myself? Mine is currently leeking from the pump and I wanted to know what is the most common source of leaks in the pump.

You are better off buying a power steering pump from Mitsubishi, and installing your pulley on it. You will get better turning.

If I go this fast at 19, I wonder how fast I will be going at 40!

The pump has several seals that just need to be replaced to fix that leak. This is not a bad job but I would be careful rebuilding the other parts like the slave cylinder and power control valve. The clearances are usually worn and will still be sloppy after rebuilds.

You need a pulley puller to get the pulley off, do a search for Mustang Parts, one good one is Nat'l Parts Depot. Seals should be widely available.

Slave cyl is not hard to rebuild - can get seal and boot kit. Just make sure piston and inside of cyl is not scored. Do NOT try to rebuild valve - get good rebuilt. The stock type rebuild kit is very hard to put in and make it last. Also gearbox can be rebuilt - several good rebuilders out there - check Mustang catalogues.
