67 with a 429!?

Ok, i know that is 1967 a shelby gt 500 was packing a 429. I also know that Shelby did upgrades to regular mustangs. But what i really want to know is if my 67 gt (currently packing a 302 that runs like hell) will be able to hold a 429 without doing any surgery to the inside.

A 428 will fit, but I don't think a 429 will. Best bet is a 351W stroked to about 427. Check Coast High Performance for those stroker kits.

Ok, well why wouldn't a 429 be any differen't. is a 428 just a 390 bored over, or it an entirely new block. Cause being only 16, i am kinda limited. My uncle has a 429 block so i was going to get that up to about 500 + hp and drop it in.. I know it was going to be a close fit but i just wanted to know if it would fit.

428 is an FE block, 429 is a 385 block. Two completely different animals. Putting in a 429 would be major surgery and more trouble and expense than it's worth. Why not just rebuild and warm up that 302 if finances are tight? You can still get decent power out of that small block on a relatively small outlay of cash. Tht's my thought.

429 takes some major work on the spring towers to fit. Not worth the work. Either do the 302 or stroke a 351W.

This is a 514(460 over)between the shock towers of a 68. (Same as 67)A bit tight, but fits.

Just because I don't want to see misinfo get spread around. 67 shelby gt 500 came with the 428 police intercepter engine, 360 hp. in mid 68 the gt 500 switched to the 428 Cobra Jet. These were the famed gt500kr cars. In 69 all 500's were 428 cj's and all 70 shelby's were 69's that didn't sell, were given chin spoilers and dual hood stripes.
Second the 428 is a stroked and bored 390 but they are both FE blocks. 390 shares the stroke of the 427. And if you are thinking 429, and want serious power, the 460 and 514 use the same 385 series block. Rumor mill has it that the 385 series block will fit in a 67 or later car, but I don't have first hand knowledge of that.

stroke a 351! I would take a 427 small block over a 429 any day.

When I was at the dragstrip last summer, there was a 67 running a 460. I talked to the guy and he said no shock tower modifications, just custom headers/motor mounts and no sway bar. It was a TIGHT fit though... I think the motor would have to be raised several inches just to change spark plugs on the center 4 cylinders.

They never put 429's in mustangs until 1969, but you can put one in any 1967 an up mustang. It requires a little massaging to get in but it is possible and I know a few people who have done it. And the GT500's always had 428's in them, nothing else was ever put in a GT500 from the factory.
