![]() Can I add headers to my 67 coupe with a 302 engine while the engine is in the car? I have the engine out right now getting rebuilt, and really want to add headers but the rebuild is wiping out my wallet. It looks like there might be room coming up underneath, but the current exhaust would have to be cut to fit the length of the headers. I thought I would ask the question, I am sure someone has tried to install headers while the engine is in the car.

![]() Yes you can certainly install headers with the engine in the car. Some are probably easier than others. I remove mine every so often to replace header gaskets to fix exhaust leaks. Not a big deal for my Tri-Y headers.
You will probably need a muffler shop to make the head pipes connect to the headers collectors (bending and welding). I'm thinking long tubes here. Again, not a big deal, but you would have to get the car to the shop without the pipes connected to the headers. Very loud right straight out of the headers. Almost sure to get you a ticket if you actually drove it on the street to get to the shop. I had mine towed to the shop for a custom made 2 1/2" system with a cross over "H" head pipe. Rev

![]() No problem. I have a '67 with a 302 and just had headers put on with the engine installed. I bought the Flow Tech headers at Auto Zone. Very reasonable. The exhaust guy that put the headers on for me said that he had to do a very minor mod near the starter (if I recall correctly) but basically he said it was an easy job. E.

![]() Thanks guys, I love to read your answers to the questions here, what a wealth of information you guys provide here in the forum. I think I will wait after I get the engine installed and running to invest in the headers. you guys ROCK!

![]() when my brother put headers on his 74 camaro, we drove right through the heart of the city to where we got the exhaust put on, and over a bridge! (echos) It was really loud, but we got away with it. I dont think we ever saw a man of the law though, which is probably the only reason. Also, living in northern minnesota, we have alot of jacked up trucks with no exhausts running around, so people really dont seem to mind...

![]() Something to keep in mind to keep you from having to make any modifications to the headers due to the starter, is u could put a mini starter in the car for a reasonable price if you shop around (35-50 bucks). Much lighter, more powerfull, and makes the header install or removal MUCH easier.

![]() i dunno if its only in ontario canada but the muffler shop here said that i could run the car over there and not get in trouble as long as i had an appointment booked with them. thats no exhaust cept headers. i thought that would be awesome hahahah i got my long tube headers on the 302 in my 70 mach but had to beat the pipe at the power cylinder? and curse alot cuz it was a little tricky getting them in. i still hafta get a drop bracket. i'm guessin it would be alot easier on a standard steering car. good luck!

![]() When I first built my engine and installed it in the car, I fired it up right straight out of the headers to break in the cam. My next door neighbor (an elderly lady) called the police as she tought that "there had been an explosion". Fortunately, by the time the police got there, the cam was broken in and all was quiet. I still chuckle when I think about the neighborhood "explosion", LOL.
