I can't see this being good.....
Well I got my car last night, and took it out with some frineds, I was in the car with my buddy, and 2 other friends behind me in his Cavaliar, and a Porsche 944 beside me, we were talking abit and decided we'd fool everyone and take off real slow, so we did and then I heard him hit it and then I stepped on it. Either way I had him for 1/4 but as soon as he hit 5th he got a few cars ahead of me, anyway we were flying at about 140mph and I was shitting myself cause a old car is not ment to go that fast. lol Anyway I kept up pretty good with the Porsche, we pulled into a coffee shop to discuss our little race and he asked me what I had under the hood. And a few minutes later my friend shows up. lol And we're all talking. But here is the problem, now my car makes out groaning noise when I'm slowing down under like 30-40mph. If I down shift or come to a stop it'll make a groan then it'll stop. It sounds like it's only coming from the rear right tire. Any info would be great. I took a quick look when I got home and it looked fine to me but that wasn't much of a indepth look. But let me tell you with the new carb and intake setup this baby is SWEEET! I thoguht my car's throttle response was amazing before, now it's INSAIN! lol I can't wait tell lunch and I can drive her again.
§am.

This is just a "WILD" guess but it sounds like you blew the rear end. Does it wine or make any odd noises when you accelerate or only when there is a decrease in speed ? Have you been 'Breaking the tires loose' latley / during the start of a race?
Sounds like the ring and pinion need to be looked at. Quote:

Put the back up in the air with stands under the axle, as close to the tires as you can, block the front wheels, and start it. Put it in first, and let it go. The idle will keep it running. If it doesn't start shaking, take a look and listen, and see what you can find. If it does start to "shake", something is seriously out of balance, and you need to have it looked at.
Take care, ~Chris

140 in a 69 Mustang???
I don't think that you can put enough horsepower behind that brick to make it go that fast. LOL

Again, it's next to impossible to reach a speed of 140 mph in your stock Mach 1. First of all, our cars are NOT very aerodynamic. You have a decent amount of torque and power from your Windsor, but nothing that great. That car is a high 14 (VERY optimistic)-low 15 second 1/4 mile car around 93-95 mph. Do you know how long it would take to accelerate that 45 more mph? A long, LONG time. Actually, you'd never get there.
I don't know if you're getting confused with your km/h to mph conversions or what, you probably even have a mph speedo. It only goes to 120 mph, and if you're estimating 140, you're way off. Not being a dick, just giving a reality check. We don't need any BS. |

took a look at your car spec under user rides, sounds like a nice faily stock car. Plugged in 3.55's in the analyzer on the site and came up with 6000RPM is 130mph with 26" tall tire. Just a guess with those 205/14s. maybe even smaller. So I'd have to agree with the crowd. Sorry.

140 in a 69 Mustang???
I don't think that you can put enough horsepower behind that brick to make it go that fast. LOL Calm on now. I have seen it done very easily in a 69. There are lots of 428s out there go can exceed 140 mph. My car ran 90 mph in second gear never got to 3rd. This is with 4.30 gears. I am pretty damn sure if I took those out and put in some 2.73 or even higher i would execed well over 140. Besides if you ever go to a NHRA national event and watch the Super stock classes You will see a more than one 69 with a 428 running well into the nines at over 140. Then there will be a whole bunch of them well into the tens in the stock classes at well over 120. JUst to let you know.

believe me or not I don't care. I'm not here to lie and make up stories. My speedo goes to 120 mph and my needle was over my odometer. If you want me to bring my friend who was in the car with me, or find the guy with Porsche. I'm not here to bs you, I didn't think my car could go that fast either but it has. I'll do it again and tape it if you really want.
As for the noise, it sounds almost like the leaf springs on the right side is creaking. It makes the noise when I slow down. It's not a high pitch sound at all. Ok not to be an ******* either but if you want to come see me I will take you for a ride. I'm not going to bs my way to make my car sound fast when I know 10 other people on teh site that have the same car. My needle was a good ways past the 120mph, it may of not been 140 exactly but my needle was past the 120 and by about the incremint of 10-20mph, I just looked down quick seen where it was then started to let off. I don't know how fast the Porsche was going. And I wasn't doing these speeds over a short time. It took me like 3 miles to get up to these speeds. I'm not here to lie and try to convince you but I will tape it and do it again and maybe make it abit more belivable. I will tape me doing it again this weekend and post the video and then I won't be classified as a bullshitter. Just I've been a member here for along while and don't want to be classified as someone who is full of ****. Back to my problem, I will be looking at it abit more tonight cause it seemed to get worse last night. All the bearing recently were changed so I don't think that is the issue but I'm not even sure at this point.

His speedo gear probably never was changed so maybe his speedo is reading higher than it should. My rear end was making a strange noise one time and it ended up being noe of the bearings. Good luck with it.

My spedo could be incorrect but either way I was hauling *** at whatever speed I was going but I will tape my spedo this weekend when I find some real empty road. 2nd do you know how hard and how much it is to replace a bearing in the rearend? It sounds like it's coming from just the passenger (right) side of the car, is that normal for it to do that too? And it sounds like it's either at the exhaust or to the right (outside) of the car, not the middle. Either way I'll investigate more tonight. Anything I should look for? or look at? Thanks, §am.

Exhaust bearings tend to go bad at 110 MPH so check that first and then the speedo flange bearing .Remember not to spin the cordless drill too fast. Last edited by induction; 08-28-2002 at 03:01 PM.. |

Not to that he's right, but I did somwhere between 130 and 135 in my '66. I know my speedo was right because I checked it out a few times before hand, with a radar gun, thanks to the caops on base(good things, not bad). Although, with 4:30's in the rear, I think your speedo was off, at least a little.

In a stock '69 Boss 302, it will do 140 max in the top end. At least that's what the cop said the car was doing when he pulled over my grandpa on I-80. Those cars will go that fast, its just a matter of getting there.
Test the accuracy of your odometer. Find a stretch that you know is a mile and see what the reading is. If its 1.0, sweet. If its 1.1, then back 10% off whatever speed you see. I've never understood people saying, "It reads 5mph fast." Really, at what speed? Sorry that's kind of a tangent, but I'd check out the accuracy of the reading just so you know how fast you're really going when the cops are around.

I don't recommend reproducing this event. As said before, the suspension on these cars wasn't the best. I know when I took my '65 up near triple digits on the speedo, it was changing lanes all by itself. I'm glad I switched my 2.8 rear gear to a 3.55 to prevent an event of momentary stupidity.

Bearing changes are easy if you have a press, or access to one. If you have a tach just look at the rpm, measure the tire diamater and caclulate. Much more accurate than the speedo at over 120. I also have no dought that were defenelty into "pull licence speed" IF your going to it again, I serously sugest you fix the bearing, brakes, or spings that are making that noise. Be carful, the cops don't like people trying to break the sound barrier, no matter what your car is called!
