Cool Mach 1 and Boss 302 in Motor Trend

Did you guys see the article in Motor Trend magazine where they were outlining the history of the Mustangs and Camaros? One little side bullet said that Ford was putting out some limited edition mustangs for the next few years. Obviously, this years was the Bullitt. Next year will be a Mach 1 with a supercharged 4.6. Then the year after that will be a BOSS 302, with, you guessed it, a 302 engine.

Any clue where you can put a down payment on one of these? Anyone hear anything else about this?

as much as i like the mach 1's i will start saving for the boss.......the boss when it came out and since then has been in my opinion the grand daddy of all mustangs whether its a 302,351,or the fastest production mustang of all time besides the new cobra r the boss 429...... do we know yet whether it is gonna be a supercharged 302 or n/a???????? i can't wait......hopefully they make as many as the bullitts that way u won't have to look to hard to find one

Cool

The Boss 429 was a beast to be sure, but the Mach 1 428 would out accelerate the Boss 429. So would the Boss 351. The front end weight bias made it nearly impossible to launch a stock Boss 429.

As far as 0-60 and 1/4 mile times, the new Cobra has been tested (again, according to mags) quicker than any full production Mustang in history. That includes the Mach 1, the Boss 429, the Shelby GT500, etc.

Werent the Boss 9's horribly under carburated from the factory, and didnt they have a relatively Mild cam for what the heads, and valves would flow.

I've heard that those things can build MAD amounts of power with just a cam and carb change.

Oh man! If the Mach 1 is in 2002 and the Boss in 2003, when is the new mustang body released? Will they but the Boss option on the new chasis?

Or will we have 3 kick *** cars to choose from?

Question

This may be kinda, sorta off the subject, but shouldn't Ford make the R engine an option for the Cobra? Look at it this way, Ford has already been comparing the newer 'Stangs to the 'Vette, and to really up the ante, shouldn't we have a car do compete with the 'Vette? Just my $0.02. Later.

Thumbs up

Is the 5.4 a SOHC or a DOHC?

I agree, offering the 5.4 in the Cobra would be awesome

I agree with ya, bigwhitecobra, but the article said they were not planning on producing a car that could match up with the 'vette. But it would be fun, though, wouldn't it?

Wink

Look at it this way, IF Ford was to put the 5.4 (DOHC) R motor in the Cobra as and option, GM could NEVER bring back the Camaro and Firechicken. The Cobra would have too much of a reputation for anyone to take the Slowmaro crowd seriously. I realize that this is just wishful thinking, but why in God's name would they tease us with the R and not use some of it's better points? Guess it's just like the FR500, but I won't go there now, I'm too tired and that is way too long of a discussion. Later.

The Mach 1 was the greastest Mustang ever made in my opinion. Maybe that is because I own one. But anyway, I can't wait to see what they look like.

Red face

What the heck is under the hood of that thing?!? I haven't seen a bulging hood like that since.......well, the R models of '95 and '00. Are they trying to tell us something?

Never under estimate the competition, huh? Hmm, even if the competition comes back as a front drive V6? Sorry, had to do it.

Gotta love that big hood. And I especially like the black wheels to match the car.

BWC, you think the GM F bodies are going to come back as a FWD V6? Man I'm glad that I'm not a chevy guy.

Atleast us Mustangers fought off fords urge to dump that crap on us (probe).

hey just because they did it to the impala, malibu and the monte carlo doesn't mean they will do it to the camaro, firebird, and trans am..............personally i don't think gm would lower themselves like that........the f bodies are the best cars they have had (along side nova, chevelle) and if they bring them back as fwd no matter if it is v8 or v6 it is a disgrace to their hard work of the past in creating such a monster...as much as i want an f body(firebird formula) ifg they bring them back as anything less then they are right now i won't even look in their direction

Sorry James. But from what I have been told, expect to see a V6 FWD Z-28 somewhere in the near future. Sad isn't it? Now, I can't say for sure(of course) but I think this year is the last year for the F-bodies until 2002 maybe 2003. Then they will become a Ricer's wet dream. Thank God I drive and love Ford's.

Ouch that's gotta hurt if you are a chevy guy. Atlest the F-Bodies went out with a bang. The new LS1's are pretty impressive in stock trim.

However the all the dumb things GM is doing it, in some ways, doesn't surprise me.

Unfortunately that will mean more dam fart pipes on the road. I wonder if Mustang sales will go up?
