69 Mustang Engine
Hey, I just got a 1969 Grande, and I don't know what size engine it has. A mechanic said it was a 351, but the VIN on the dash by the windshield says its a 302. It has a 2v carb, but it doesn't feel like 210 hp. It feels much more than that. Is there a way I can tell a difference between them? Thanks.

Brain fart, the only thing I can think of is find a 302 and measure the width of the intake manifold, then measure yours. IF it's wider, then it's prob a 351w. If the engine looks a lot bigger then a 302, then it might be a 351C.

351C
One way to tell the difference between a cleveland and a windsor is the cleveland has the water neck for the upper radiator hose attached to the block where the windsor has the water neck attached to the intake manifold.
Other than that, without measuring the distance between the heads, there is no other way that I know of to tell the difference between 302W and a 351W. I would think it would be marked on the intake manifold somewhere. What about firing order. It think they are different.

Check firing order
If its an early engine and its 13726548 then its a 351C or W and if its 15426378 then its a 302 or 460. These are only for early models. But if its carbed and V-belted then its probably early.
That should get you going. Between the water neck differences and the firing orders, you should be able to guess which engine it is. But watch out. If its a late I think 5.0L era and up and its been switched to carb then it uses the 13726548.

Chilton's
In perusing my old Chiltons Manual, I came upon the fact that in 1969, the 351 W used the larger 18mm spark plugs while the 351 C used the smaller 14 mm plugs. That should answer the W/C question anyway.
The Vehicle identification plate located in the left door jamb or near the windshield, will have a letter designated for the engine. Should be the 5th from the left on the VIN. F=302 H=351 2V M=351 4V Hope that helps. Rev
