73??

First time poster great site!

My question is I have a 73 fastback and am having problems in the rearend. Everytime i stomp on it the rearend feels like its shifting on one side or rolling? something is wrong it just does not feel right?. I have checked underneath and nothing seems to be broken or messed up? what could the problem be. Thanks Jim

Re: 73??

shifting ..prob have an open rear end and only one tire is spinning thus pulling you to the right
if tires are hopping then your springs have seen their time

I don't understand your term..."shifting". As FatOeknee stated it could be wheel hop, which is rear spring issues.

Or if your cruising down the road 35 mph to 55 or so mph. Then you plant you foot in it and the rear "shifts", does it clunk?? car change lanes?? vere to one side or another?? bounce??

A little more info would help.

I noticed it the most when i was driving highway and hammer it 35-60 mph it does not clunk, the car wants to vere to one side or pull to it. And yes it does want to change lanes a bit when i hammer it. There is no bounce at all.

I was told last night that it could be u bolts, Leafsprings, Bushings, Shackle or he said the T axle loose? it has traction bars on it also. I dont feel it as much off the line but 25-60mph and hammer it then it pulls, and vere's to the other lane a bit it just does not feel right?.

Which direction does it pull/shift? (i.e. which direction does the rear end seem to want to go?)
I'm far from an expert, but this doesent sound to me like a case of "one-wheel-wonder", especially since it doesent involve wheelspin. I would think its more likely that under heavy load one or more of the bushings in the rear suspension are flexing, allowing the rearend to get out of alignment. I would check them again, and make sure to clean them off so road grime isnt hiding a cracked/worn bushing.

BTW are you using lift shackels? I've always heard they were bad, but never any specifics. Maybe they flex?

Any possibility of loose u-bolt fasteners? Does the car have lowering blocks? I think we're on the right track here as to wandering rear end allignment.

I feel it in the right rear and then pulls me to the left lane a bit.

Anyone know where i could find the casting #'s on the engine block? it is a 351 cleveland with 4v heads i believe they have a 4 cast into the corners, with 351 torker intake, and holley carb #4779-6 the carb i am also having problems finding out what it is?. Thanks Jim.

Re: 73??

After i actually looked under the rear of the car and did some bench presses with the rear bumper i found the problem!.

Where the rear shocks mount to what looks like the body the right rear shock is not connected it moves around like it is broke not the shock but what looks like a small rubber thing on top of the shock it is not stabalizing the right rear.

Is this a easy fix??. I can get picks of the problem if that helps.

Re: 73??

Probably need new rubber grommets and just tighten up the nut inside the car under the rear seat back. If the shocks have more than 50,000 miles on them or appear shot, I would just replace them anyway. Hopefully that will fix the problem.

Rubber grommets on order, and yes that did help out alot i am going to order shocks as well. I am having some other problems when i am 50mph and up the front seems to shake and have a little bounce what could this be?. I will probrably get new front shocks as well.

Re: 73??

50 MPH bounce is most likely the tires. Out of round, out of balance, cupped or all the above.
